hair/makeup challenge number 1! (1940s pinup)

Challenge date: FEBRUARY 18th -- MARCH 4th

Ok ladies! Let's get this challenge started. I thought we could start off easy with a 1940s pinup look. For hair, I thought we'd start specifically with VICTORY ROLLS. So I'm going to try to find some tutorials for short hair, medium hair, long hair and african hair. And makeup tutorials, too! I could use your help, too! If you see something great online, post it! We want easy tutorials, or difficult ones for those who want a real challenge.

You can start posting pics whenever you want.

Here is the current list of pinup/1940s tutorials (that I will continue to add to).

  • OK here's what I got up to this Friday night!

view of the top. Lots of pins are visible, because I haven't yet invested in a set of blonde ones!

    Makeup:

I didn't have a pretty flower, so I put a black bow there.

Matti snuck in for some camera action too!

Here you can see the other side of my hair with the roll.

  • Wow, you look great! Was it hard to do? I'm going to try the hair tonight or tomorrow. My hair isn't as long so I hope it still works.

  • I'm so down for this! I watched those tutes last night until I almost fell asleep- Chris had to drag me up to bed lol

Nukke- you look great with victory rolls! The style really suits your face!

If you've got short hair it will definitely be easier for you, and will turn out much better, I'm sure!

It was HARD for me. I have really fine hair and a lot of it (the folicles are dense) so whenever one of those fancy ladies on their fancy tutorials said "brush it out smooth" I wanted to scream at them. I have like a million little hairs flying all over the place! I should have taken photos of my first attempt when I tried to follow the tutorial exactly. It was a hilarious mess. So I gave up and just winged it, and I think it turned out ok :D

Doing the rolls definitely takes some practice, though. This is only my third time trying to roll hair like this with my fingers.

  • wow great job nukke. Not to mention you are gorgeous :) I am too busy this weekend but will defiantly try on monday. I am excited. i really can use something like this even for my daily life. i have fallen off the bang wagon after having kids :(
  • I agree, that style really suits your face, Eeva! Makeup looks great, too. Looks like you just walked out of a 40's? 60's? poster!

I'm gone all this weekend but I'm tempted to try it out. I have shorter hair so that tutorial for it looked easy enough....

  • Here are some photos of my first attempt: I have to admit, I only watched the beginning of the one video that would load for me, so I winged it too. I only did one roll on each side -- I tried 2 on each side, but then the back didn't look right. I redid the rolls several times to get it right. My hair is fine and always slips out of any style I try. I used a bit of Redken rough paste and that helped keep the rolls from slipping out entirely.

It would probably look better if I curled the rest of my hair with a curling iron, but I don't even think I have one of those :(

Pangur the Cat wanted victory rolls too, but his fur is way too short.

  • ohmigod I tried and tried and tried to get my rolls to work last night. Sucked. I gave up LOL!! I tried the makeup too but I was pissy because the victory rolls WOULD NOT work so it turned out terribly- I was a wreck last night hahahaha!

I'm TOTALLY trying again on Sunday, though.

FWIW- victory rolls are DEFINITELY for girls w/ short hair. My hair is so long that I grabbed a section & pulled up to start rolling, but I couldn't reach the ends! Ha! (This is why 99% of the time I just let it air dry.... now I'm remembering!)

  • robotcake--they turned out great! I think your curls are much more defined than mine were. Your cat is adorable.

Hippie--if I can do it, so can you! I've got crazy long hair, and it's definitely trickier than short hair. But persevere!

  • well I'm still jealous of you girls with the gorgeous long hair. mine used to be really long and I sometimes miss it. I'm glad at least that it's at the point now where I can do something with it again. I am so thrilled with the victory rolls that I just did it again today!

one little trick I figure out on the second try -- I twisted the hair in a loose spiral first before rolling from the end. this helped keep the hair together so it doesn't fall out as you're rolling, as my layers tend to do.

  • the hair looks great ladies, I have really fine hair and don't even own a curling iron and seriously suck at doing my hair so I'm afraid to even attempt.

Great job, ladies. I'm seriously impressed. You both look beautiful and very pinup!
  • A bit late but here it goes...

    first trial below

    second trial below

    with my hair pulled back

This was fun! The hardest part was getting my short bangs to stay back. A lot of hairspray helped :) FI said he really liked it, but then he also said I looked like I was in the Jim Carrey version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" :(

  • I'm a little late posting too. But here goes. I've actually done this before, working on styles for the wedding. I think it turned out pretty well. My makeup is pretty much how I wear it with a redder lip than usual.

I also pinned my hair up and took a few.

  • I tried for over an hour last night, but like many of you have long and very THICK hair! It turned out more like a beehive than like victory rolls! I may try again tonight!

I also have very thick hair. I think the trick is to curl all of it and then use much smaller sections. Keep trying!

try spraying your hair and curlling it first. Then use those curls to aid your roll. HTH

I have really *fine hair too. Try getting come pomade and using that. Right after you curl your hair (via curling iron or curlers) rub just a bit it makes the hair tacky and helps it stick. If you can't find any pomade, hair taffy and hair spray work just as great.

  • Another great tip:

If your having trouble starting the curl and getting it to stay as a curl till you can at least wrap it a few more times (hope that makes sense) Grab the end and wrap it around your thumb. It really helps out.

And bobby pins are your friend.

I wish I had some pictures of how I would do my hair but sadly I don't have any of just victory rolls. I'll do it tonight and post some.
