Vintage Bridesmaids Dresses?

Hello fellow vintage retro knotties!

I'm having an outdoor/garden style vintage wedding next June and really having a hard time figuring out what my bridesmaids will wear! Like many other brides, my BM's range greatly in size; from 4'11, over 200lbs to 5'7, 120lbs to 6'0, 190lbs very busty. My colors are all jeweltones so I'm looking at deep rubies, purple, sapphire and emerald, with each girl wearing one of those colors. I initially fell in love with the convertible dresses because of their versatility, allowing each girl to be comfortable and still accesorize to fit the theme and I could also order them from the same place at once:

But I also like vintage style dresses that could also let each girl be comfortable and wear a dress that fits her body but I don't know how to go about getting everyone dresses that don't clash too much (esp with 3 of them living in different states). This also may be less expensive than the other option(trying to save as much as possible here, even though everyone is responsible for paying for their own dresses).  Here's an example:

I don't know what to do! What are you ladies doing for BM dresses? Any thoughts?

Re: Vintage Bridesmaids Dresses?

  • Have you checked out Unique-vintage.com? They have a lot of different options if you're not set on a certain color.

I just scoured all of the major bridesmaid dress manufacturers to see who had the most vintage looking bridesmaid dress options. They are all choosing which dress they prefer but I am choosing the color. The materials will even be different.

    Good luck!
  • Vintage BM dresses are hard, especially when everyone has a different body shape. I had a Victorian wedding and it was very tricky to find a dress that would match the theme. I can see where it is even harder for you with them in different states! I went on a fact-finding mission at salons first and then brought them in to try on the selections I'd made. In the end they were able to help me find a dress they loved, matched my theme, and was in budget. If you have not gone to some salons, I would. Maybe you will find exactly what you want.

It would probably be easiest to give them a color, style, and length and let them pick their own. If you want a vintage dress like the  pic you have, I'd make sure that they are comfortable with the style first. It might be difficult for really curvy girls to fit those types of dresses. There are tons of vintage reproduction sites-- I googled it and a plethora came up.

  • Thank you for the suggestions! I will begin visiting different shops ASAP to weight my options!
  • I've seen plenty of etsy sellers as well who specialize in making retro style dresses for a reasonable price. I feel like 1950's style cocktail dresses would probably flatter a variety of figures.

  • Finding vintage dresses for bridesmaids is not the easiest. We are doing all of our's in the same vintage barkcloth so all of the dresses have the same fabric, but each dress style is different.  I'm constantly looking for the dresses.  So far, I've found all of them, except for one.  It's our maid of honor's dress which means we have more options and could be changed to a dress in the same fabric, but a different color. I've still got a little over 6 months, so hoping I find the last one in the same fabric still.  If you go this route, know it's not easy and you will spend a lot of time looking for the dresses.
  • My bridesmaids' dresses are one of the things I'm not requiring vintage. They are all just wearing a black dress of their choice. They are paying for them, so I didn't want them to have to buy something they wouldn't wear again. Aside from varied sizes (size 4-18) they all have various taste and style. My pictures won't be quite perfect because a few of them don't match the vintage look, but that's okay.
  • I would be worried about being able to find vintage dresses in larger sizes (i.e. anything over a size 8) because for some reason, a lot of vintage pieces out there that are available are TINY. But if you can find them, I'd totally go for vintage or vintage-inspired. I like convertible dresses but idk if I'd be as jazzed about that as i would be about a kick ass vintage piece.

  • I mean I'm not dead set on having authentic vintage dresses, moreso vintage inspired. I guess that gives me some more options in that respect.
