So my future hubby and I are both hippies and actually met at a 4/20 celebration. I am originally from new york and have this classic new york vibe. He's from the pacific northwest and totally has that hippy eugene kid vibe to him. This is my second marriage my last one was an elopement and the marriage lasted one week. This is his third marriage. So we're having a new york/fairfield county wedding, I really want a vintage theme but he really doesn't want a formal wedding and kind of wants a wedding that not only celebrates our love but has a hippie 4/20 vibe to it help. My parents will help pay for our wedding if we do a traditional wedding and without my parents help I don't see us affording our regular bills, a 3,000 mile move, plus a wedding in new york.

Yeah, I'm with the PP. Are you asking how to do a 4/20 themed wedding but still keep it somewhat traditional so your parents will pay for it? Are you planning to spark up doobies instead of a champagne toast?

We are having a 60/70's "All You Need is Love" Themed Wedding.... It's not the formal "affair" but still very nice.... ie.pocketfold invites, programs, etc... to help the theme I'm doing alot of handmade things.. ie centerpiece vases (decoupaged starbucks frappuccino bottles.)

I think that you can definitely have that "vintage" feel and still make it a "wedding appropriate" feel for your parents

Have a buffet of munchies instead of dinner...cheetos, snickers, etc. Wear dreads and don't shower or shave you legs/pits for a week before the wedding.
Say "dude" after every line of your vows.
That should cover it! :-)

wear a vintage 70s style wedding dress. I love those ! use the color green as the base color of your reception

Ha, that would be awesome. :)

My FI and I wanted to get married on 4/20 this year, but it's in the middle of the week, and our parents wanted it to be on the weekend to make it easier for everyone.

I would say, if you want to keep your personality and also have your parents "approval/help" you have to compromise. Let them have a say on certain things, and then you get to choose something else. Ceremony=traditional ; reception = more you?

I can't wait until the day I get to marry my best friend!

My fiance and I are having our wedding on 4/20/2012. We are activists and have always concidered this day a holiday, and it is always just a happy day for us. As much as we would love to have a "special" cake and all that, we just felt that it was not appropriate. We brainsstormed ideas of how to make it fun and funky. Finally we thought of our favoite movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and it became our theme. We incorporate candy "minchies," and the main colors in the movie are purple and green the color of the plant. It is the perfect balance of what us and our friends know about this day, but still "wedding" enough so that the grandparents have no idea.
