So...what's the purpose of a bridal/wedding shower?

One of my coworkers asked if I was having a shower and I didn't have an answer. I'm lost on the whole shower tradition. I'm the first among my circle of friends to marry and navigating these wedding customs is new to all of us.  Obviously, there's no bride, but if this is a free opportunity for gifts, I'm open to it.

What really is a bridal shower and who plans it?

Okay, so the bridal shower is a party where you would receive gifts to help set up your new home/life together. Traditionally it is hosted by the MOH. And even after finding this answer in my many wedding books it still seems to me like a way to get more gifts, so I say go for it!

    more gifts lol
it is usually to send the bride off into her new life married
armed with stuff... for the house, recipes, etc...
    thats the traditional way
now a days its for the couple... not just the bride

usually your MOH or bridal party plans it...

What everyone else said but also you can get naughty gifts as well.  I'm in my 40's and wasn't in need of the "getting started" items.  I loved the little nighties and personal items I received.  My MOH threw it with the help of the bridesmaids.

From my "work" shower I received a big hunk of cash!

Hmm, another opportunity to receive money and intimate gifts? I like the sound of that. Imma ask my one of my attendants to start planning.

@minsu5 we are both brides and will do our shower together. My friends were married in 2012 and the bridal party split costs equally and each took on a task i.e. games, favors, decorations, location. I want to play the games I did for my friends.... And of course gifts!

I like that idea. I'm cool with sharing the shower with my FI. We have many of the same friends. When I searched online, I came across a "Stock the Bar" shower. We like alcohol, so that may be the best fit.
