OP - I agree that these boards are a little over the top. People really do turn for support and advice here and sometimes are met with more than they bargained for. I've pretty much reserved my questions on my wedding for another site that will be honest about etiquette, lessons learned and best practices while being open to intelligent discussion and not jumping on people. If you'd like these boards to stress you out less - take them with a grain of salt - or just avoid them all together.

So why are you here then?

There's plenty of great ideas, conversations and guidance that come along with not asking big questions to the group and reading with the idea that there are these things underneath some of the snarkiness and overall fights that happen here. Some of the regulars and new people here have great messages to send if you aren't taking things too much to heart like the OP.

In all honesty, I don't come here for support. I have a wonderfully supportive family, FI and friends IRL. The women on these boards will give me their honest opinions. And that is something I can't necessarily count on from above mentioned family, FI and friends, why? Because they love me. They will support me, even if I have a bad idea. And so I come here, just to make sure that the ideas I do have are proper per etiquette rules and aren't going to be ridiculed and get me banned from my social circle. 

Because of the level of anonymity afforded me by the internet (and not making my screen name my full name), I can be certain that the opinions are honest and forthcoming. They are not trying to make me feel better about myself. I have seen situations on these boards where there has been a great amount of sympathy, camaraderie and support, but if you are asking an honest question, then you should not only expect and honest answer, but hope for it. How else are we to learn about things that we don't have a scope of knowledge about, but to seek outside sources that have been through the experience themselves? 

I assure you, I have had some near missteps, however because I was lurking before I ever began posting, I was able to avoid several things that would have been seen as a faux pas. And I am grateful that I have a separate place to get good advice and solid feedback. I don't need these women to blow sunshine and rainbows up my ass, I need them to show me where I could potentially LOOK like an ass to the people I love the most and help me avoid it.
