Chit Chat

I have my grumpy pants on tonight-- health issues and annoyances.

I have already wined.  Now I need to whine.

I went to the doctor today (finally) to get a bunch of lingering/traveling joint pain sorted out.  Turns out I have a laundry list of issues, which are caused not just by overuse or bad ergonomics when working out, but probably some serious systemic problem.  The doctor thinks it might be chronic Lyme or some kind of rheumatoid problem (hopefully not RA).  It seems pretty serious and like this is definitely not something I can just fix up in a couple of visits.

I have so many upcoming appointments: rheumatologist, blood tests, nerve test (which I've had done before and is VERY painful), X rays, occupational therapy.  This is going to be a lot of time, and money in co-pays, to get worked out.

On top of that, I have bursitis because I've been overcompensating for the hip pain caused by whatever systemic ish I've got going on.  So they gave me a cortisone shot in my hip while I was there.  I know it's supposed to start feeling better within a day or two, but damn it hurts like hell right now!  I'm icing it now before I go to bed.

It was just a very long day of health stuff, class, clinic, and an anniversary event for my law journal.  Then on the way home we had a very weird, hostile encounter with a cabbie because he was unprepared to make change for a $20 (posted on E-board).  The whole thing was unsettling.

Maybe I need more wine to go with my whine.  Blah.  At least tomorrow Fi is off of work and we are spending the day together.

  • Wow, I am so sorry to see you had such a shitty day. I have Fibromyalgia likely linked to either MS, SLE or the whole trifecta, so I totally get what you're going through. It sucks.

Tests and specialist appointments are a bitch. I'm Canadian, so my insurance covers my tests and medical appointments, which is fortunate because I have a copious amount of them. I've seen 2 rheumatologist, 2 internal medicine specialists, a neurologist, an ophthalmologist, dermatologist and immunologist, had countless x-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds, EKG, CT scans, MRI, bone density scan, EEG, and depending on how the EEG goes I may need a spinal tap. Such a shit show- here's hoping your doctors are more successful than mine at finding out what's up.

You are so right- Bursitis hurts so bad. I have it recurring in my hips, shoulders, and knees. Tonight my right knee is killing me- hurts to bend it, hurts to straighten it. It's 2:11 in the morning and I just cant sleep because I'm in tears with pain. Tried taking my rx NSAIDs but they do diddly squat- can't get any of the good stuff like corticos 'cause the hospital here closes at midnight and FI is away tonight and I'm in too much pain to drive. Lovely.

Well that's enough of my venting lol. Guess I have a case of the grumpies too. I hope you get to feeling better soon- and I hope you and FI have a relaxing day tomorrow. In the mean time, enjoy the wine- nature's best remedy imo ;)

I am going through a lot of mental and physical and emotional stress right now but I am healthy physically in general and your post has reminded me of that. So thank you. I'll be thinking of you and sending lots of good vibes your way that whatever it is you are dealing with is manageable.
  • Thanks @jdluvr06, @papillon0928, @Ic07.  I really appreciate the thoughts!  Pain is just a bitch to manage and it's scary that there's something wrong but we don't know what it is yet.  Doc said Lyme is really hard to deal with, but he hopes it's that instead of RA, so that's what I'm hoping right now too.

I think I will feel better a) once the cortisone kicks in, but especially b) when I see the OT and get some kind of plan for what I can do in the gym.  Exercise is often my stress relief and it's incredibly frustrating that I can't go for a jog or take a fitness class to feel better.

  • I'm sorry. I have fibromyalgia, and the rigmarole to get diagnosed was a beast. It took me several years to learn to live with the pain, but I'm pretty functional now. So there is hope! My thoughts are with you.
  • I am so sorry. I don't have first-hand experience with any of this but love a few people who do. From what I've seen, the shots hurt for a day or two but then make you feel like there's nothing wrong. My gramma has knee and ankle issues and the shots allowed her to dance at my sister's wedding.

A friend of the family has Lyme disease and has had a rough time. She's involved in a local
Lyme support group that she seems to love. Fingers are crossed for you.

  • Not knowing is so hard. And stressful- and then that stress makes the pain worse, so it's a vicious circle.

I find meditation helps, and my doctor and PT both recommended low-impact activities- I love swimming, yoga and light walks. I find them really helpful.

I'm really sorry to hear this. I hope you have an amazing support system in your family and friends to help you get through this difficult time.

    Sending good vibes your way!
