Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Panic about the ceremony flowers

So my wedding is 22 days away and we are doing our own flowers and everything. Our colors are green white and black. There are light green and white hydrangeas and black satin sashes going down the aisle with the same color light green flower petals alongside the black aisle runner. On the alter area we were going to do calla lillies in some vases and stuff over a black alter cover, the flowers the bm's and myself are carrying are calla lillies and that is what the entire reception has. Now I'm worried it is going to look tacky together!??!? I was going for just an array of flowers at the ceremony but now I don't know. My fiance and I have about $0 left for this wedding and I don't know what to do!! Any thoughts?

Re: Panic about the ceremony flowers

  • You're worried that calla lilies will be tacky with hydrangeas?  I don't think any flowers can be "tacky" with other flowers.  I think you're freaking and WAY overthinking it.  As long as the colors coordinate, it will be totally fine.

  • I would think that as long as you love it, no one else will notice.  As a guest at many weddings, the only reason I took note of how well things went together was for my own wedding planning.  Otherwise, I don't really remember things like that.  And everyone has their own view of "tacky".  If you feel it is tacky, you're the only one who is going to notice (or really care).  Everyone else is focused on you and your fiance!

And if you have $0, why worry?  Just relax and enjoy.  This is probably more of a pre-wedding freak out than an actual worry about the flowers.  Take a deep breath and keep going.
  • You're overthinking this.  Here's your morning reality check.

What were the altar flowers at the last 6 weddings you attended?  Can't remember?  That's because no one notices these things except the bride.  No one is going to leave your wedding commenting that the altar flowers are tacky.

Relax.  This is NO not a big deal.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I agree just relax. A few weeks ago I was freaking over centerpieces and how I could do cheap centerpieces that would look nice, etc, etc, etc . . then I thought to myself . . I've been to probably 4 weddings in the last two years and I can't for the life of my remember the centerpieces, the decorations or hardly even the color of the BM's dress. Only the bride will remember those things forever . . the guest will look once and say that looks nice and then have another drink and a piece of cake. Pick the flowers and colors you like and everything will be perfect.

What you described sounds fine, really.

Do you already have all the supplies?  What color are your attendants wearing?

If you are using fresh flowers, have you already set aside money to pay for them?  If you are short on money, and don't have the black ribbon or altar cloth, then skip it, and just do the plain flowers.  Hydrangeas and callas are very pretty and striking flowers and don't need a lot of frills to look good.

  • I doubt YOU'RE even going to notice the altar flowers.  Hopefully you'll have more important things to worry about at that moment than whether two types of flowers look nice together.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
