Honeymoon ideas in Michigan or surrounding areas?

Hi All,

Im getting married in Flint, MI (I know this is the Detroit board, but Flint doesn't have it's own section), me and FI are sutdents and dont have much money to spend on a honeymoon.  We're trying to stay local, in the Michigan and surrounding states since we can only take a tiny honeymoon. We actually live in Chicago, so thats not really a great option.  A whole bunch of my extended family lives in Flint though, which is why the wedding is being held there, me and FI don't really know this area of the country well, He's originally from AZ and i'm a military brat who's spent more time on the coast.

So bottom line is, do any of you wonderful people have any ideas on where we can honeymoon?

Thanks in Advance for the help!

  • This B&B in South Haven is lovely, and they have packages with a jacuzzi room and massages. FI and I stayed there the Christmas before last and loved it.

Atheneum Suites in Greektown (Detroit) is really nice too, and there's lots to do within walking distance - casino, Comerica Park if you're here during baseball season, great restaurants. You can take the People Mover from there as well.

Traverse City is gorgeous, especially if you're into wine. Best deals are in the off season (not summer). My friends and I love renting a house up there on the bay - all the amenities of home, but super private.

  • I would say take the gas money to visit Marquette. It's lovely this time of year, and lots of outdoor romantic places to go.

  • A lot depends on the time of year.

Traverse City, Petoskey, Glenn Arbor are all amazing. Mackinac Island is fabulous, but expensive. Depending on how long you have, look into Camp Mackinaw: http://www.campmackinaw.com/. They have adorable wooden cottages that overlook Lake Huron right next to the Mackinac Bridge. Not sure you can rent for only a few days...........plus you have to bring your own bedding and towels, LOL.

The ideas for Detroit above are good. We've gotten a room for our anniversary in August and stayed at the Atheneum and purchased tickets for either a Tiger game or Lions pre-season game and had fun.

The coolest town is Saugatuck, on the southern coast of Lake Michigan. It's like a New England town, and I love it. Lots of artsy stores and restaurants on the wharves and coast.

Whatever you do, check out www.tripadvisor.com. I used them exclusively to plan a 2 week drive down the coast of California. You can get restaurant and hotel recommendations from real people and it's a marvelous place to look.
