Venue cancellation - help

I'm the mother of a bride here in Central California.  We have a dilemma.   My daughter's wedding was planned for December and now, due to unforseen circumstances, she will be having a smaller wedding in a month or so.  Our dilemma is this - we reserved a nice restaurant that just recently opened for business again.  I believe we may be their first booking.  We paid a deposit of $1200 and then 2 weeks later we emailed them and told them that the wedding was cancelled.  They wrote back with a simple "thank you".  Something doesn't seem right though.  I know the deposit is non-refundable, but shouldn't they offer us credit at the restaurant or ask if we'd like to use the property for something else?  Or should we suggest moving the date and still have the reception there?  I'm not sure what our rights are - especially since we cancelled 5 months before the wedding.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!
