Sit at any table for ceremony and then assigned seating for reception?

My fiance and I are getting married in 3 weeks and I am still unsure how to make the seating arrangements for the day.  We are having the ceremony and reception in the same room.  We will have the tables set up before the ceremony (no dishes out until after the ceremony).  My concern is how to seat everyone.  Should I have them sit where they will be seated during the reception?  If so, my parents would be half way back since the head table will be at the side of the room and not up front where the ceremony takes place.  Should I have people sit at any table so I can have my parents at a front table?  Please advise.  Thank you!

I would seat people where they'll be seated for the reception. It'd be really awkward to say to everyone "Ok, now everyone get up and go over to the table in the hall to find your escort cards - you'll be sitting somewhere else." I just think it'd be awkward enough to disrupt the flow.

If you want your parents in the front, just switch where you'll be standing. If you can't do that for some reason, then set up a few chairs in front with little "reserved" signs. They can sit there and then staff can move those chairs out of the way when the ceremony is over.

  • Thank you for the information.  We are having everything at a museum so after the ceremony the guests will be able to walk around while we are having pictures taken.  Guests will need to leave the room for about 30 minutes while the room gets set up for the reception (tables set up with dinnerware by caterer).  I do like your idea about reserving a couple of chairs for my parents.  That might be the best way to go.
  • I'd just assign tables (not actual seats) for both the ceremony and reception. I think that will be easiest for everyone.
  • Put people at assigned tables & see if venue can set up a few chairs up front for parents/vip
