How much to spend on wedding gift if I am a bridesmaid?

Hi everyone. The wedding is out of town and I have finished paying all my expenses which totaled about $1500. How much is acceptable to spend on the wedding gift? I don't have much money left after paying for the other expenses but I don't want to be rude either. Is $40-$50 okay, or should I spend more? Thanks.

    Yup. You're under no obligation to spend a certain amount. Spend whatever you can afford. No need to go overboard.

    What ever you can afford is good. Don't go into debt over a wedding gift, especially when you've already spent so much to participate.

    I agree with the PPs! Don't ever feel about about "only" being able to spend a certain amount on a gift. It sounds like you've invested a lot in being there for your friend, and even something small like a card with a nice note and a bottle of wine, or something small and sentimental, would be perfect.
