Northeast gals - where to visit over Xmas weekend?

H and I want to take a little mini-vacation over Christmas this year. This is what I envision:

Packing up us and the dog, and going to stay in a semi-secluded cabin, preferably with a fireplace. I don't want to visit anywhere touristy, so we're specifically avoiding ski mountain areas. But if we could snowshoe, that would be cool. I'm thinking a 4 hour drive or less from NY. Any ideas??

Re: Northeast gals - where to visit over Xmas weekend?

  • Awesome idea! 2 suggestions. First, western Mass. Maybe Becket - easy trek to Stockbridge for a nice dinner, but if you don't seek out civilization, you won't find it. Or, north of there, maybe Ashfield or Buckland. Similarly, if you want to check out a cute little town, Shelburne Falls is so close. Plenty of trails for snowshoeing. Second, Lake Winnipesaukee in NH. It's too flat for skiing, and if you can find a small cottage on the lake, the views are incredible. Both areas would be 3-4 hours from NYC.

    Have fun!
  • Winnipesaukee is gorgeous, and I'm partial to VT but thats just me.  Sounds like an awesome idea though!

    Thanks!! I'll check those out!
  • Now you actually got me into doing that for Christmas, that sounds really romantic. So I just looked an White Mountains NH & Lake Winnipesaukee are over 5.5 hours from NYC. That will will prob work out for me in MA but not so much for you. But Berkshires of western MA would be 3 hours. I don't know any places off hand as I'm about to research a little for myself right now! lol

Poconos, PA. I haven't been but I always wanted to, they have that hotel with the champagne glass hot tub hahah. But I've heard there are tons of cabins and it's only 2 hours from you.

  • I would totally check out the Poconos BUT my parents live there. And if I'm in PA, I will have no excuse to skip any Xmas celebrations. D'oh.
  • I'm a big fan of the Catskills. Gorgeous up there but definitely not as touristy as the berkshires or Vermont can be (and only a few hours from NYC!) Im going to a B&B up there in a few weeks that specifically had fire places and I know has a farm house that is detached from the rest of the property, will report back! If you're looking for a cabin, be sure to check out Air BnB.

We're in the Hudson Valley, so a lot of the Catskills area is sort of close to home. I was looking to go somewhere just a little further away.

Ah gotcha! I actually grew up in Rockland County! Then I would go up to the Berkshires. Absolutely gorgeous up there. Places like Lenox have beautiful spaces without having ski spots so it's not super touristy.

  • Also, if you've never been to Newport, RI, it's adorable. I was there in the off season (April) so not positive how much is open in the winter but great food, charming town and I'm sure there are places you can rent there.

  • The Kent, CT area is really nice and not super touristy (during the winter.. the town itself gets pretty busy during peak foliage).

Kent is right near a really nice section of the AT that is great for snowshoeing.  Lots of cute little B&Bs.  It's realatively quite becasue most people head further north for the skiing.

It is also within a stone's throw of Great Barrington, MA.. which has some lovely breweries (and new a distillery!)  and more nice hiking, it's great for snowshoeing because there isn't as much steep stuff in that area... more rolling hills than anything else.  And that entire are is great to hike/snowshoe in during the winter because a lot of the trails go along ridgelines, so you get lots of vistas.

PM me if you have any questions!

You know what - Newport is a GREAT idea! We both love it there.

This is too funny. My FI and I currently live in New City.

When we were on our HM in Italy, we met a couple that lives in Stony Point. It's such a small world.

Too funny! Yeah I grew up right off Little Tor Road, went to Clarkstown North!  Love it up there.  I go up every month or so to visit my parents and the dog still!

  • Look into SkyTop Lodge in the Poconos. It's beautiful and activities/meals are included. They have a main building and cabins available.
  • The Adirondacks are beautiful, and I have been longingly looking at some of the resorts in that area. Here are some that I would love to stay at:

    The Fern Lodge-Chestertown, NY

Elk Lake Lodge-North Hudson, NY (this is about 15 minutes North of Schroon Lake, NY, where my avatar picture was taken)

Friends Lake Inn-Also in Chestertown, NY

These are all near trails that you should be able to go snowshoeing on, but a decent ways away from popular ski resorts.

  • Too bad you don't want to go to the Poconos. That's what I was going to suggest. FI and I live in NYC and we love it there! I understand that you want to do something just you and your H. I've never been to Newport, but I've heard the mansions there are incredible!

  • @decembergrl2014 You totally must go to Newport! Any time a friend visits me from across the country I bring them there and they all love it.

  • I live in the Berkshires, and I highly recommend it! Come RIGHT NOW, we're at peak color. ;-)
Mount Greylock closes down the roadway in the winter, leaving it wide open for snow shoeing, if you are so inclined.

Then happy I, that love and am beloved

  • Newport is AWESOME. I've only been there in the summer though...
  • Do Newport, though snowshoeing might be out of the question depending on the snowfall.
