Don't send your bro any more videos?

Dear Prudence,
I am a proud new mother of a 3-month-old baby girl. We live far away from our families and send lots of pictures and videos. The other day I sent a video by email of the baby splashing around in the bathtub. My brother became upset on receiving it. He called the video child porn and said everyone was at risk by having it on their computers. The baby wasn’t covered but also wasn’t in any sort of sexual positioning and I see absolutely nothing sexual about the video. Is this true that this qualifies as child porn? Are we no longer allowed to take pictures or videos of our babies in their natural state?

Re: Don't send your bro any more videos?

  • Brother sounds like he has a guilty conscience about something, if an innocent video of an infant in a bathtub sends him over the edge.
  • this reminds me of the time that someone posted a pic of their kid on p&e, someone else drew a peen on it using paint, and then the whole board freaked out that it was child porn.

  • The kid is 3 months.

I wouldn't send nude pics of my kid, but I think he needs to simmer down.

  • I wouldn't scream child porn, but...

It is something to think about on a little more fundamental level...how we violate kids' privacy on an extensive basis. Without consent.

  • People really do that on fb. They share when their kid gets in trouble at school, and many other sensitive subjects. Not always cool.
