(NWR) Can 2014 just go away NOW, please? I'll skip Christmas. I'm okay with that.

We're putting our Lab down today. She has cancer in her nose, and it's gotten to the point where treatment is just prolonging the inevitable. She is already having a hard time breathing, and it's only going to get worse as it progresses. The vet referred us to Auburn's oncology department, but she said she didn't think they could do anything more than prolong her "good" time by a month or so, which doesn't feel right - it feels like we'd be making her suffer more just to get another few days with her, and I just couldn't do that.

I am just ready for 2014 to be over. 2015 has to be a better year, right?

I am so sorry to hear you are going through this. It sounds like you are making the right decision and will help your memories of the good times. We waited too long to put down our dog last year and it was heartbreaking how bad it got :(

Sending you lots of hugs today! I know that's an awful feeling, but you're doing the best thing for her.

Oh, I'm so sorry :( FWIW, Auburn has a fantastic vet Oncology program, but your vet is likely correct in that it may be time to let her go in peace. Lots of hugs to you.

Sending you all the hugs, thoughts, prayers, and soothing mom noises possible.  I had to put my baby girl down in August.  (We didn't even know she was sick)  It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

Think of all the good times you've had together.  You're doing a brave thing.  Stay strong <3

Yeah, they do. Our vet is an Auburn alum so I trust her assessment, but if she'd given any kind of hope for a better outcome, we'd have been there yesterday.

ETA thanks, y'all. I gave her an extra hug this morning, and I think my dad will be with her, so at least she'll be loved on.

Aww so many hugs and positive thoughts. We just put our dog down recently, and I can totally empathize with how hard it is. It's okay to be sad and wallow today, that is totally allowed. Thinking of you!

So sorry you're grieving :(  We lost our lab in 2012.  It was devastating.  It's a hard decision, but it sounds like it's the right one to make.  Sending thoughts and prayers and hugs.

My condolences. Kipling was entirely right about "giving your heart to a dog to tear"...I think I've been as upset about my dogs as I have been about people, so I understand how you're feeling and I am so sorry for your loss.

If you haven't read "The Power of the Dog", click here. I don't agree with Rudyard Kipling on many things, but this particular piece hits the mark for any animal lover, I think.

...will it turn me into a blubbering, mascara-streaked blob? Because I may just bookmark it for later....

Quite possibly. Less saccharine than Rainbow Bridge but maybe not one for public consumption anyway. Comforting, though.

Thanks, all. I really think we did the right thing. That's what the vet said, and my cousin (another AU vet) agreed. It sucks though. We brought her buddy home (our ginormous Pyr). He looks absolutely lost; he has been with her since he was a puppy. They were staying together at the old property, and now he's just following the Bichon around looking pitiful.

My heart just hurts for you.  Our furbabies can bring us love at just the right times, when the world sucks, and their place in our hearts is so valid and strong and loving.  I have hated everytime I have had to let one of our precious furbabies go - I'm just so sorry.
