Stupid people

Re: Stupid people

  • This is a little different situation on how people are stupid.

I work for 2 guest houses in NOLA.   We require a 1 night deposit AT THE TIME OF BOOKING to reserve a room with us.  The deposit is 100% refundable up until 24 hours from your arrival date.  This is noted on every website you can book. It's on the confirmation page.  It's mentioned in the confirmation email you received.  THIS IS WRITTEN FUCKING EVERYWHERE.

Being a small place the deposits are not automatic.  So every morning I come in and run deposits from yesterday's reservations (or on Monday from the weekend).

I can not tell you how many credit cards are declined.   Let's just say it's a ridiculous amount of times.  If the card is declined an email is sent giving them 24 hours to provide us with a new one.   Me being the nice person I am normally gives them 72 hours.    Then the reservation is cancelled.
Then I get yelled at for cancelling the reservation.  Dude, it's fucking written all over the fucking place we are going to change the card a deposit.   And BTW  - if you do not have $129 on your card, then maybe you should not be traveling.

I'm forever being asked if I could hold off on taking the deposit until their payday.  They do not get we run at an 95% occupancy rate on the weekends.  I don't need your business.  Someone with actual money on their card will take your reservation a few hours later.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • This entire thread makes me SO. HAPPY. that I took the time to condense my Facebook Friend Count to people I actually like to interact with, because 90% of the people I like to interact with are people whose general stupidity levels are much lower than the average slice of Facebook population.

  • People who post stuff on facebook without fact checking get defriended. Seriously. I just can't with people who aren't critical thinkers. If a news article is shocking, take two seconds to figure out if its A REAL NEWS ARTICLE.

I unfriended people who said they hate Obamacare and it should be replaced with the Affordable Care Act instead. I quite frankly don't give a fuck about whether or not you like Obama or Obamacare or whatever else. Do not care. But if you're too stupid to know that "Obamacare" IS the Affordable Care Act, then GTFO.

Wasn't there a Jimmy Kimmel bit on this? Where he asked a bunch of people on the street "Which do you prefer, Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act?"

This baffles me. I can't imagine putting my credit card into a website and then getting salty when it is declined. Aren't people embarrassed about that kind of thing?

Also, shouldn't you maybe have a couple hundred bucks to your name (or at least to your credit line) before you go on vacay? (Not saying people who are struggling shouldn't have vacations; but we all should try to live within our means, even if that means camping and staycations. I've been there.)

When I did customer service at a hotel in a casino resort, I would have people flip out on me all the time because their CC was declined for their $50 hotel room deposit. My manager would have to come out to deal with them because they would get so irate and insist that they can't afford the deposit but they NEED to stay for the weekend. She'd get so annoyed with how often this happened because: Why are you here gambling if you can't even afford a $50 deposit?

  • Oh I ALWAYS comment with the Snopes article on shit like this. My dad is notorious for posting conspiracy theories about Obama (the one about Sharia law in the ACA, shit like that).

Yep, me too! The stupid "Money Bags" thing comes around on Facebook every year ("This March there are five Fridays, five Saturdays, and Five Sundays! This only happens every 853 years!" Uh, no. It happens in March every 5-11 years, thankyouverymuch).

I just don't understand why people believe all of the shit they see other people post on FB.

When in doubt, check snopes before posting.

  • Oh my god, the whole chain letter/email/facebook post for good luck thing really gets me going.  Do you still believe in the tooth fairy too? Are you five? I don't think you're supposed to internet really until you're 13.

  • Seriously, the only time I flipped out over a decline was with the bank when I knew my check had hit and the money was there. I did not flip out on the nice lady working in the dr. office, but drove to the bank all upset (clearly other issue going on here) and flipped out.

I will say I did have a dumb moment myself. When the teller confirmed the money was there but the IT system crashed. I said OK, I will just go to the ATM and get cash. The teller had to remind me that they can hand out cash to people manually instead of "Automated Teller".

  • You guys, I have people on my FB account that notoriously post articles from The Onion....because they think those articles are legit.

I have another girl on my FB that has some sort of weird fan club and she drives me crazy. One day she posted all about how she was skeptical about vaccination. At least she had a ton of people tell her she was nuts (and dangerous) at that point. But she's always been nuts, so meh.

Oh, and I have a cousin super into crazy conspiracy theories. He posts how he thinks rocks have consciousness and aliens put us on earth. That's always a delight.
FI has a cousin who believes the Free Masons are evil and a satanist society. He posts stuff on it all the time.
Is your FI's cousin also my cousin!? My cousin is also obsessed with the Free Masons (and thinking they're an evil secret society) as well as the Illuminati.

  • Or if you love Jesus, share this post.  Yes.  That is the deity that I want.  The one that watches to make sure I proclaim my religion on facebook through some cheesy generic image text.

    It's crazy.

Some of these reservations are for big events.  It's like we are suppose to extra nice and give our rooms away for free so they can get drunk at Mardi Gras.

  • I had a FB friend that posted an article that HIV was created by the U.S. government to kill Africans. I'm an HIV scientist and commented that that article was false with scientific data to back me up. She responded that I must work for big pharma or the government so my opinion wasn't valid.

  • People are always surprised that I get more angry at faux science than at poor grammar, considering my editing profession. Missing commas aren't killing people like some faux science is, except for maybe in the case of "Let's eat Grandma!" rather than "Let's eat, Grandma!"

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • I used to get really bothered by grammar mistakes, and then I realized some people really do struggle with it so I've laid off.  But the pseudoscience stuff is just plain willful ignorance and I can't handle it.

  • Let's also talk about the article claiming that cocaine was found in Coor's beer. So many of my friends shared that one. Ughh idiots!!

  • I want to post a Facebook status now saying, "It breaks my heart how stupid all of you are."

  • haha this thread just makes me giggle. There are some people that should just rethink their Facebook choices.

My Aunt recently chastised me for using Chloe:
    image

On my Facebook page. "There should be an adult on that picture instead of that beautiful child."

Um, Chloe is a fucking GENIUS. She knows her shit and she's still in a harness booster seat. I just directed her to knowyourmeme.com

  • I have a friend who shared the oranges thing yesterday. I didn't comment, but I actually might today. I just checked and someone else commented "ewww" and she commented something about "how do people come up with this crap?"

So I can't tell if she believes it or not. But when she first shared it, it was just the pic without any caption.

I have commented with snopes links before on things people have shared.
