Skin Care

I know there was another thread over this but everyone's skin is different and i had a few questions myself.

My face is a combination of oily and dry. In the winter I really can not do anything detox because of how dry my face gets. So my question is what is a good light (heavy creams and i dont mix real) moisturizer? Something that can carry over to when my skin is oily in the summer.

My other question is what are some good face washes that are decently priced?

TIA

  • What's "decently priced" to you?

  • I use Clinique Dramtically Different Gel for the day time.

At night I use Vitamin E oil. It does feel heavy at first but if you do it at night, it will absorb by morning.

My skin sounds like yours. Dry in the winter but can't use anything too heavy.

My skin is similar to yours: really dry in the winter and oily in the summer. If I use a heavy moisturizer, I break out like crazy. This one has never made me break out and keeps me moisturized without feeling heavy at all.

What helps a lot is to put it on right when I get out of the shower when my skin is still moist. It seems to absorb/moisturize better.

Another thing that has been a big help with winter is DermaDoctor Wrinkle Revenge glycolic acid face cleanser. The acid is really gentle and eats away dead skin cells. If  I tried to exfoliate I would get really red, raw, super dry patches in the winter, so I couldn't do much and my skin would build up dull dry skin cells. An esthetician advised the DermaDoctor cleanser and it has been awesome.

  • Have you tried oil cleansing method (OCM)?  I tend to go back and forth between skin care regimes, but I've been contemplating going back to OCM because my skin was really great using that method (although, it's been looking pretty good now, too) and I have a bottle of almond oil sitting in my bathroom and just ran out of the stuff I have been using lately.

I have combo skin (used to be just oily, but it veers toward combo these days).  In the summer, I very rarely feel the need for moisturizer when I do OCM.  Most OCM websites recommend a ratio of castor oil to other oils (or places SELL their own blend of oils).  Truthfully, I just use straight almond oil (or jojoba depending on what I've got lying around).  A 16 oz. bottle was $10 and you only need a few drops.

Other cleansers I've tried and liked:  Vitamin E cream cleanser from The Body Shop (they always have sales, especially if you're an LYB member), the complexion bars from Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve (online only), or I frequent the Clinique counter quite a bit.

Moisturizers:  I've been using the pumpkin argan oil blend from Chagrin Valley for the last year and really like it.  I've been using Origins for eye cream though.  I tend to use Clinique quite a bit as well.  And when all else fails and I'm too lazy to shop when I run out, a couple drops of jojoba oil works.
  • What sort of cleanser are you using now? It sounds like it is too drying for your skin. I would try something more gentle, oil or cream based, or the oil cleansing method @jacques27 posted. You can even put a drop of oil (I like argan) on your skin after cleansing while your face is still damp before your moisturizer (I like clinique for a light everyday moisturizer) to help lock in some moisture without being too heavy.

  • to be completely honest i dont do alot with my face because of dry skin. but my face has been breaking out like crazy lately and i look like i have chicken pox by all the red spots and i need them GONE!!! so anything light for moisturizer and something gentle as a cleanser would be great. i would order some perfectly posh stuff but they are so expensive but go a long way but trying to order it is a pain in the ass.

I wash my face with Dove Soap. Just the regular bar of soap. I get acne pretty bad but the Dove seems to work really good. You still need to follow up with a moisturizer but that should help. With dry skin and acne, too many harsh chemicals will over dry your face,.

  • Do you have a sephora close by? Or you can also order online. They have some nice trial size packs that you can try out, and if you like a particular item you can spend a bit more and buy the full size.

http://www.sephora.com/great-skin-great-deal-set-for-dry-combination-skin-P385632?skuId=1599414 Might be a bit too drying (I find their soap isnt the best)

http://www.sephora.com/fab-to-rescue-sampler-kit-P393004?skuId=1675941 ive heard amazing things about this line, but its a but more expensive.

Vote for first aid beauty here. I have dry, sensitive skin, and I think using gentle products benefits most people who don't have very oily skin. From FAB I actually use their body wash on my face (it's crazy gentle and I just prefer it to the face wash)--it's a big bottle and lasts forever. Then I use the ultra repair cream, which I also think is a good value, and is moisturizing without feeling heavy.
  • For drugstore brands, I love Nivea - they're decently priced, and they've got good lines for different types of skin.

For drugstore products,I use Cetaphil face wash every single freakin' day. I used to struggle with hormonal breakouts all the time, and my t-zone gets super oily...but I have dehydrated skin. It's a nightmare.

Try the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, and then apply a light moisturizer (I use either Neutrogena Sensitive Skin formula, or Simple Replenishing Rich moisturizer). If you wear make-up, those both work well under liquid, powder, and mineral foundations. Neither of them are heavy, and they do not irritate my skin at all. I also have been applying the Body Shop Vitamin E Nourishing Night Creme every other night to give my skin an extra boost, but I only do that over the winter.

  • I use CeraVe. It's under $20 for a 12oz bottle. Day and night - year around. I have super sensitive skin so the fact that it's unscented and such is good for me.

I also break out occasionally. When I do, I spot treat with a script I got from my derm. But before I went to the derm, I used clearasil and that worked pretty well.

@emmaaa - do you use vitamin E oil all over at night or just in some spots? I've been curious about this but never tried it.

  • @southernbelle0915 I use it all over. I absolutely love it. I break out really easily and this doesn't bother me. It makes my skin super smooth and has a nice glow in the morning.

  • To be honest I don't use anything.   Washing my face includes just throwing some water on my face in the shower.  Sometimes i add a little ivory soap.   I do not wear much if any makeup so generally the soap is when I do.

Since moving to the mountains I do use Oil Olay moisturizer every morning.   It's really dry here.  But that is about the extent of my routine.   I've in my 40's and most people think I'm younger.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

The best face wash I have ever used is The Body Shop's Tea Tree Cool and Creamy Cleanser. ($12.00 at Ulta) It works perfectly on my somewhat oily skin without drying it out.  I am the cryptkeeper, now, so I use Lancome's Rénergie Lift Multi-action face lotion. It lifts and tightens skin, and isn't too heavy. It is a little perfumey, but it doesn't react with my skin. This lotion is about $95, but it will last for 6 months, at least.
  • I also use CeraVe. I use the cleanser and the moisturizer. I like them both a lot.

I also use tea tree oil for when I have breakouts. I find that helps without drying out your skin. Not an overnight miracle by any means, but it does seem to reduce the spots fairly quickly.

  • I have sensitive skin and I currently use Cetaphil. It works for me, not to mention that it's incredibly affordable. You might also wanna check out the Way skin care device. It's a sleek gadget that detects your skin moisture levels and also promises to provide skin care and beauty tips after analyzing your skin. I'm waiting for its arrival come November - just enough time to pamper my skin for my June wedding next year!
  • I have combination skin that tends to be on the dry side, so I literally struggle with dry patches and some oily spots. I also have adult acne. I've tried a bunch of stuff but the only thing that's seemed to clear up my skin is:

    1) The 10 step Korean beauty routine. I know it sounds silly, and at first it seemed time consuming, but it's made a world of difference in my skin. And no that it's become a habit, it really doesn't take me very long at all.

     http://intothegloss.com/2014/04/korean-beauty-skincare/

    2) I just started shaving my face. I saw another post about it and did some "research" (AKA Googling), and decided to give it a try. I haven't been doing it long enough to decide one way or the other, but so far I have seen a difference in my skin. It's softer and the flaking I wake up with some mornings around my chin are gone.

    Hope that helps!

I use the Cetaphil cream on my body. A friend recommended it and it's made my skin super soft. I get compliments all the time. I used the face lotion for a while but it didn't work for me.

What products do you use for the 10 step? I've also been researching this. I just bought the konjac sponge from sephora the other day (boscia?) and its nice. One of my friends is actually teaching in korea and coming back for the summer, so I might ask her to pick me up something.

Me three! I've used Oil of Olay products since I was a teenager - used to use the "Complete" line but then I started getting old and I started using this. I love them. Also have combination skin, acne-prone. I'm also fair/freckled so the SPF is a must.

For cleansing I use LaRoche Posay Effaclar - Gel Cleanser with a Clarisonic daily, and the DUO for spot acne treatment.

So the girl who wrote the post runs a website that sells Korean beauty stuff (SokoGlam). She sells a kit with all 10 products, so I bought that at first. Since then I've been experimenting with other Korean brands while keeping the stuff from the original kit that I liked the most. I'm at work so I don't know the names of the stuff I'm currently using but I can look at them at home and post again with the info.

Just to add, while I really like her website and blog, I now buy my stuff mostly from Amazon unless she has an amazing sale; it's less expensive and I get free shipping because I have Prime. I also go to a store near where I live called The Face Shop; it sells only Korean products (I live in an area with a large Korean population). Shiseido is good too but expensive!

Also, if you do end up buying her kit from her website, sign up for her e-mails first because she'll automatically send you a 10-15% off coupon that you can use.

  • @flbride2015 I think we have 'the face shop' here...I assumed it was some sort of rip off of the body shop! haha. Maybe I'll have to check it out. I've actually read that article before, but I didn't know she sells her own stuff, because she was recommending other brands.

Lol. Definitely not a Body Shop ripoff. It's a Korean beauty store. The one I go to has amazing customer service. The girls who work there are really knowledgeable and they have sooooo many different face masks!

Got it, misunderstood. Do you also do the double cleanse? I know oil cleansing is supposed to be amazing, but I just cant get onboard with it. I use oil in my hair, and I find myself constantly washing my pillowcases because if even a little oil is transferred I break out.

I do the double cleanse at night. The oil is great for removing makeup gently. It also doesn't dry out your skin. Plus, you follow it up with a foam cleanser so no oily residue is left on your skin, or at least I don't feel any.

Like I mentioned before, I struggle with adult acne and I've found that my skin has signifcantly cleared up since doing this stuff. I think before I was trying so hard to get rid of it using all these different, harsher products, that I was actually making it worse by overdrying my skin. I know it sounds silly, but I feel like my skin feels nourished and dewey now. Btw, if you decided to try it out, stick with it. Like any new skin regimen, you may break out at first, but then it'll all clear up and hopefully stay clear.
