Groomsman gifts

I'm certain it's been asked before, but I thought I'd check with everyone anyway.....I am looking at getting my groomsman and best man either Navy 1851 Black Powder Revolvers or AR15 pistols. My Fiancé says both are ghetto. The AR15 pistols may be a little...well, ghetto, but the classic black powder revolvers seem kind of classy to me. What does everyone think?  i really don't want to do a a tie or cuff links or something else that's been done a million times. It's a fairly upscale wedding and I've known these guys for nearly 30 years each. They deserve a classy gift.

Shop for them like it is their birthday. What would they like? It does not have to be the same gift.

Most states (assuming you're US based) require pistol permits and in some areas this can take a year or more, requires background checks, home interviews, and/or interviews with references. Is that stuff your GMs would be willing/able to do prior to the wedding? Additionally can they properly secure and use these guns safely?

My H is a hunter and we own some antique guns as well and take gun ownership seriously. He would love a revolver and we would be able to have it safely in our home, but many people would not.

I mean.....are guns a classy gift??? I'd also say its a huuuuge jump from cuff links to guns. There's probably a big middle ground there, it's not one or the other.

That being said, it really just boils down to what each man likes. Shop for them as you would if it was their birthday.

If they all like guns and can responsibly own and store them, so ahead. Any uncertainty, go with something else. My FI was once in a wedding where he received a beer tasting tour. It was the perfect gift for FI. Other groomsmen in the wedding received different things (time at a golf range, a set of books, bottle of scotch ...)

Can you expand a bit on what you mean when you say "ghetto"? Please, I need to understand exactly your train of thought and why you say that. 

Do they each want those particular guns? You can (and should) get your party gifts they'll appreciate and use and that are tailored to them as individuals, they don't need to match or be expensive. As others have said, shop like it's their birthday. If you'd get them these guns for a birthday gift, then get whatever you want. There's a big jump from cuff links (also not good gifts unless your party freaking loves cuff links for some reason) to a gun.

Ok, thanks. I agree with you, seems like a strange choice for a thank you gift. but for some reason I read your comment as being more personal and thought it was based on previous posts or something.

DH bought his GM a bottle of their favorite spirit (siete leguas tequila for one, Johnnie walker blue for another, etc.), and it went over really well with the guys.
 Guns don't strike me as classy, but I'm very anti-gun so I could be biased? Ditto PP about permits and stuff if you guys are gun people.

I genuinely cannot fathom why you think buying someone a gun is "classy". It is quite possibly the trashiest thing I have ever read on TK. And throwing around disgusting words like "ghetto" to describe an object?! Just..,. Wow! 

What could possibly go wrong with surprising people with firearms so they are unsecured and unpermitted and then surrounding them with lots of alcohol...

If you want to do something classy, weapons ain't it.

Get each of them a really nice gift that's specific to their taste. Since you have a hefty budget, what about airline vouchers for the traveler, a really nice set of knives for the chef, a new set of clubs for the golfer, an awesome bottle of bourbon for the whiskey connoisseur, one of those sweet espresso machines for the coffee guy, a gift card to a favorite steakhouse, a spa package for the man-pamperer, a really nice bottle of wine for the sommelier, a sky-diving package for the thrill seeker....you get the idea.

Literally anything except weapons is probably a better gift.

Are your wedding colors camo and hunters' orange? That's all I can imagine when talking about guns at a wedding. Talk about classy.

All I can think here is, "straw purchase."  I feel like this has the potential to open up a huge can of worms and cannot possibly end well for anyone.

Honestly, if you want to something more "guy" or masculine, I would go for a knife.
My H got the guys a pocket knife - they're all into that - and got them engraved as well so they're more personalized. A year later, some have used them, others would prefer not to.

Guns are just no.

I do know people that received guns as gifts but they were gifts from SOs who were fully aware of what was needed in order to give a gun.   

DH gave nice knives to his GM.   But the knives are a tool - not a weapon.

I am debating whether or not this is a real person or someone with a lot of free time during summer vacation.
