Can't Decide

Hi everyone! I'm trying to decide if I want to add a few DIY touches to my wedding in August. I know its far off but I work full time and am a full time student in a master's program, so I'm trying to get my ducks in a row and plan for time accordingly! I want to do sugar cookie escort cards since I love to bake, and then I was thinking of a cute edible favor since who doesn't love another good snack! It's an end of summer wedding, but we don't really have a theme outside of our colors which are deep jewel tones. I was thinking of either doing a simple chocolate bar with a custom wrapper, or since it's a summer, a little smores bag, but I'm torn between the two.

Girl, I’m a full time grad student and full time employee too. Forget the favors. Lol.

In all seriousness though, favors are not required. The reception is the thank you to your guests. If you are short of time (as I’m sure you are), they can easily be skipped. You’re probably not going to feel like cooking in August, but the sugar cookies do sound cute. If you want to enhance your guests experience, I suggest putting the money you would have spent on favors towards something else at the reception, like more drink options or another appetizer.

  • If you do either of these, I would order them. Bless your kind DYI heart....don't try to make sugar cookie escort cards in the days before your wedding.

You could DIY the bags or the tags or the wrappers for the chocolate bars, but keep it simple. The two weeks leading up to the wedding aren't the best for DIY jobs.

  • If you do the sugar cookies, you need to order them as many bakers require all dessert type foods to be sourced through them because of food codes and their reputations.  And, we've had knotties up here who outright had their Grandma who baked their wedding cake, get turned away from having cake at their reception because it wasn't made in a licensed facility, so you want to check with your venue on their rules as well.  Also, consider the value of your time in the days leading up to the wedding.  If you're having 20 wedding guests, casual event, not much that you need to do because you hired great vendors to do the rest for you, go for it with the blessing of your baker/reception hall, more than say 40, hire it out, you've got WAY too much to do being the BRIDE than to be worried about cookies that tell people where to go.

Also, please don't do the Smores bags, Unless they're done immediately before (like day before)in an airtight bag the marshmallows end up dry and nasty (great for hot chocolate in winter, not so much for Smores in August).  They're cute in theory but I've never seen them where even the kids want to eat the marshmallow's...

If you want to DIY something, make your veil, that's something you can do a little at a time in the months leading up to the end of August without leaving it for the last minute when the most important thing you can be doing is preparing for the life transition.  Or a monogrammed aisle runner.  Or linen treatment for the sweetheart/guest book/etc. table.  There is way too much to do last minute than try to be baking!
