I still don't understand it.  Other than alcohol (in some places), I don't know of any other product where stores selling them need to be closed on Sundays so "employees have a day of rest to worship God".  I wonder why car dealers (the owners) have gotten the short end of that stick.

    Chick-Fil-A.

Seriously, I remember a ton of stuff being closed on Sundays when I was younger. Like, make sure you fill up your gas tank on Saturday if you're going for a Sunday drive. I thought it was stupid then, so I totally think it's stupid now. I don't understand how these laws pass church/state muster.
    Chick-fil-A and hobby lobby.

And usually I get the urge to craft and eat chicken on Sunday's....why is that?

Yeah but, to be fair, those are company policies to be closed on Sundays.  That's their right to choose to be open/closed on whatever days/hours they want for whatever reason.  They aren't being dictated to be closed by a state or county law for essentially religious reasons.

At its core, it is literally telling business owners, their employees, and their customers that they HAVE to abide by a strict religious tenet.  Even if none of those people share that religion and/or beliefs.

@MyNameIsNot, I have heard from people who grew up here that it did use to be a much wider swath of products that couldn't be sold on Sundays.  Which brings me right back to why were laws lifted for everything else, except cars, lol.  @banana468, I don't know much about car dealerships and how they run/model sales.  Maybe it is the general public's dislike of car dealerships, lol.

But it seems to me that it is another example that the concept of "separation between church and state"...has a long, unspoken history of "as long as its Christian", after it.

I'll get off my soapbox now (sigh).

Illinois, which is as blue and non-Bible thumping as you can get, also has the law. I just looked up the reason and apparently the dealerships themselves are against overturning the law, even though legislators have been open to it.

Quoting from a Chicago Tribune article: "Dealers opposing Sunday sales say they favor giving employees that day off to spend with their families. They also point out many banks aren’t able to finance vehicles on Sundays, so sales on that day would create problems rather than solve them."

Okay, okay.  One more snark, lol.

I'll also point out the delicious irony that, since I don't have a running car at the moment and couldn't go look at that truck on Sunday due to blue laws, what I could have done was...

Walked to the casino and spent all of Sunday drinking straight liquor and gambling, lol.

Why must I keep looking for logic and common sense in laws, lol?

The bank aspect does make sense, I guess.  But odd.

Weekend was good!  Friday, I went downtown with some girlfriends and had a blast.  Then, we got a late night call off, so after 1.5 hours of sleep I went into work.  But I was done by 2, napped and then attempted date night with the hubs.  I was still too tired.  Yesterday, I went HAM on the weeds in the back yard and pulled a muscle in my shoulder.  It sucks.

This week is busy, but not work busy which is great!  I'm working today, tomorrow & Friday (for a wedding celebration).  Wednesday I'm walking in a parade with H (so dorky) and then going to a fireworks thing and Sunday we are hosting a fundraising BBQ at our house.  Should be fun!

You are the best!  Thanks for looking that up.  The only thing I could find anywhere was talking about blue laws.

This makes some sense though, I think nowadays, it's not as much an issue.  Dealerships are open long past when banks close during the week and on Saturdays.

But if the dealerships aren't especially fighting it, then it won't happen.

As compared to my (above) casino example.  That is a seriously heavy hitting industry.  Orleans Parish passed a law about a year ago that banned smoking in casinos and bars.  Lots of patrons against it.  Lots of mom and pop bar owners were against it.

And then there was Harrahs.  They could care less about the bars.  But wanted their casino to be an exception.  I heard it was a sight to behold.  They had about a dozen attorneys show up, en mass, at all the hearings.

They've bent Orleans Parish to their whims many times.  Including being the only land-based casino allowed in the area.  All the rest are on big boats.  But they lost this time, despite all the show of power.  Though they later got an "okay" to open outdoor gambling areas that allow smoking.

Up until a few years ago, package liquor sales were banned on Sunday, but not bar/restaurant. So I can go to a bar and get sloshed, but I can't have beer in the comfort and safety of my own home.

When the proposal to open up Sunday sales came out, the liquor stores actually opposed it, under the guise of giving their employees a day of rest. The real reason was that they'd either lose sales to grocery stores if they stayed closed Sundays, or they'd have to spend the money to be open an extra day.

Local laws especially can make no sense. I once took a weekend getaway to Michigan to a county that, whoops, doesn't sell beer or wine on Sundays. The law didn't include liquor! So we show up to brunch on Sunday and they couldn't serve us mimosas, but they could serve us bloody Marys.

I also don't understand laws that say grocery stores can't sell alcohol above some limit. So the beer companies make weak beer for grocery stores and their regular product for liquor stores. Say whaaa...?

Edit to add- in my early 20's I didn't know Chicago wouldn't sell alcohol before 11am on Sundays. I was going to a baseball game and we were going to tailgate. The 7-11 wouldn't ring up my little bottle of vodka. I was all, "But.. but... tailgating!" Employee was all, sorry bruh.

I think it's 10 now, at least in bars.

I only know this because one Bears game we were down early and got to the bar at like 9:45. The bar was already nearly full and the bartender took everyone's orders so BOOM 10:00 hits and she cranked out drinks.

That is some crazy stuff!  Especially the no beer/wine on Sundays, but liquor is just fine.

I'm not sure if this is federal law or just a lot of states, but companies can't/don't issue coupons for wine/liquor.  Maybe not beer either.  That's why you'll sometimes see "rebate" offers on bottles, but never coupons.

In Louisiana, possibly a lot of states, sellers have to make a particular % of profit on liquor.  Though I don't know what the exact profit % is.  It could be beer and wine also, but I'm pretty sure it is just liquor.  It is to keep stores from selling liquor "too cheap".  Which is a bit silly because even a heavy discount on a more expensive bottle of Grey Goose is still going to be many times more than Taaka (low quality cheap stuff).  It would make more sense to say that liquor bottles of X size can't be sold cheaper than $Y.

@short+sassy  if you look at a lot of car dealerships out there, many offer financing in addition to the car.   The haggling and purchasing of the car and their financial offerings are a lot of what comprise their business model in addition to their garage offering ways to service your vehicle.  They make a ton of money on the financing of a vehicle vs. the sale of the vehicle itself .

Compare that to Tesla which doesn't feature dealerships and instead is sold directly from the company.   I'm hardly advising that all of us go out and make Elon Musk richer but his business model is shaking up the current vehicle selling process and it's upsetting dealers because their bad model is now being examined.

Living in CT our liquor laws are silly.   Only in the last decade or so can you buy alcohol until 9 PM and on Sundays.  Grocery stores (and convenience stores I believe) can sell beer only but must adhere to the blue laws.  It's at least the same beer you can get in other liquor stores.

Then you can also get the same beer (and probably higher ABV beer), wine, and spirits in liquor stores (or package stores - packies for short) here.

Chicago also bans the sale of certain alcoholic products.  When DS was engaged, he and (now) DIL decided to make their own limoncello.  The sale of Everclear is banned in the city.  The sales associate at my suburban Binney's raised more than an eyebrow when a small, late 50's suburban woman came in to purchase 18 bottles of that lovely liquor!

Jen - Sorry your mom has to ruin nice events for you.  Good for you to skip the 4th at their house.  When you mom started in on being unemployed, I hope you just got up and walked out!  Bean dip that woman!

    Stuck in box...

Unfortunately, bean dipping doesn't work with my mom. She sees right through it and keeps needling whomever she's with.

Sunday we helped unload the truck for DS1 and DIL to move into their Ohio home. It is a really cute house (rental) but OMG was it hot! Of course the house had no central AC just a couple of window units. I was never so happy to get back to an ac hotel room and a nice shower! Monday we unpacked and did more set up. It is all coming together and looking like their home. DIL had her first day at work and DS1 is still looking for a job. Today (Tuesday) we head back to Indy via DS2's to pick up doggies. Our little girl dog is having some walking issues so I hope to get her into the veterinarian as soon as we get home. Apparently this started while I was in Chicago last week but H didn't think to mention it to me or take her to the vet then!

Also DS2's GF broke up with him Sunday night. He is devastated. Poor guy. He falls hard when he falls for a girl. I won't say anything against her to him ( in case they get back together) but I'm pissed at her. I think she knew she was going to break up with him for the past month or so but was using him for free cat sitting and stuff storage while she went on an extended visit to her family post-graduation pre-job. I could be wrong but this is a mamma bear talking and venting.

We are getting ready to hit the road. Have a great day everyone!

Oh yeah! They also ban the sale of those little hotel bottles. And that really sucked in our early 20's when we bar hopped a lot. In college (out in DeKalb) we'd buy the hotel bottles, sneak them in our purses, buy pop at the bar, and pour in the liquor from the privacy of a bathroom stall. When we moved into Chicago at 22, well, couldn't pull that trick anymore. Good thing we grew up and got better jobs to afford proper cocktails, haha.

    they have tampon flasks too!

funny story, I bought my mom these flasks (she LOVES them and then my aunt had to get some) and told her about the tampon ones too. She goes "But I don't use those anymore".
Mom.  Security doesn't know that.  They're not real tampons!!!

How easy are those to fill and clean and do they leak?

I've tried several different camo flasks and they all seem to suck in some way. I have a bigger sunscreen one that leaks terribly. Except the hairbrush one. That one is great. It's huge but totally works.

The ones I linked to, don't leak.. It's a twist cap. I did have hand lotion ones that snap open and those do leak.  I may have even thrown those out.

we just run water out of them for a long period of time and set to dry.  No problems yet!

right? Not a beer drinker either!  Although we brought these to the hawks/blue jackets game, but the soft drinks were almost as much as a real drink.  Albeit, the drinks they pour are so weak you KNOW they under pour the alcohol or are watering that shit down.  Even a double was weak there.  And almost $20.00 for a double.
Towards the end, H and i were just pouring this out in our drinks willy nilly in-front of everyone.  The game was almost over and the hawks were losing. I was like....."wanna throw me out?  fine! throw me out.  It's not fun when your team is losing anyway!"
