Question on rank protocol!!

Does anyone know the protocol on referring to the groom as 2nd. Lt. on invitation if he will be commissioned the week before the wedding. So basically he won't be a Lt. when the invitations are printed BUT he will be a LT. the day of the wedding. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think there's someone on this board who was going to do this, and we convinced her not too, which ended up being a good thing, since commissionings can be delayed for all sorts of reasons.

Also, it's inappropriate to send out invitations stating his rank as anything besides what he is when they are printed. People are going to get those invitations before he is commissioned. He is not an officer until he is commissioned.

Just put his name, no rank. If he does get commissioned on time, put it in the program or something.

Agree put it in the program if he gets rank and do not send it in the invitations.  I am not sure who is on your guest list but he might want to include someone he went to school with, currently working with or former/current commander and that would like very bad for an invitation to go out to one of people and him not have been commissioned yet.

Well he will most definetly be commissioned on the day of the wedding. B/c he graduates from school the same day he commissions and the graduation date is set. We are having a military wedding, so my dad who is retired USAF will have his rank on the invite, so I thought it be silly not to put my fiances too.   Thanks for the advice. I am going to have my dad make a few phone calls and find out for sure before I make a decision.

Use his current rank at the time you print the invites. Upgrade to his current rank for the programs. Using his rank before it is official is frowned upon.

Yea I was thinking bout doing that. Not sure what rank I should use, b/c he was enlisted and was an E-4, but than became a cadet. So would I put cadet on invite? I'm so confused lol.

Cadet?  Do you mean candidate?  No, that's not a rank, it's a title used to indicate that it's someone who is trying out to be an Officer.  You could put his enlisted rank, which I believe would be Corporal at E-4 though that may depend on the branch.  Then on the programs you would put 2nd Lt.

No hes a cadet. He is not at OCS. Hes in the National Guard and goes to Texas A&M and is in ROTC. So he wears a cadet rank (a circle) on his uniform when he goes to drill. He was a specialist, but after he contracted ROTC he no longer wears his e-4 rank.

If you want to include his rank, the technical rank would be Cadet.  However, it isn't something that I would put on my invites if I were the Cadet.  I would leave the rank off for the invite and then include the rank in the wedding program.  Like Stan said, proper procedure is to include the rank at the time the invite goes out.
Also, just because he is supposed to commision the day after graduation doesn't mean it is a sure thing.  Delays happen all the time.  We had a Cadet in my unit who had his commission delayed 3 months because of a tiny glitch in his paper work.  Lesson #1: Never take anything as a sure thing when it comes to the military.
