Diamonds vs Moissanites

Since my BF told me he had to get the money back from the jewelers, I've been doing some research. I've been looking up cheaper alternatives to diamonds and I think I found something very interesting.

Have you guys ever heard of moissanites?? (I just saw that one NEYer is thinking about getting one)

They shine brighter than diamonds, they are colorless, have great quality, and are very inexpensive (compared to diamonds). I'm really surprised that more people aren't buying them and I've never really heard much about them.

What do you guys think? Would you consider getting a fake diamond for a cheaper price but great quality?
The more I think about it the more fantastic it sounds...can you guys think of any cons?
Here are some websites that I got some information from:

It isn't a diamond.  It is a gemstone in its own right. It's a beautiful clearless stone, but if you're looking at it for what it is and not as a "fake diamond" then there isn't any drawbacks.   It is very strong.  Sometimes there can be some discoloration, but less if you get it enhanced.

I seriously considered a Moissanite. I do suggest finding a store that carries them so you can see one in person. I don't consider it a fake diamond, though, just a different sparkly colorless gemstone.

Because they are double refractive, they are extra sparkly which you may or may not like. The jeweler I went to carried both Moissanite and a different manmade stone called Lannyte. He gave us one of each and said to go stand out in the sunshine to compare. We chose the Lannyte because I didn't care for the yellow tinge to the Moissanite. Lannyte is less expensive than Moissanite, but also not quite as hard.

The Charles & Covard site has a store locator to help you find a jeweler that carries Moissanite.

Moissanite isn't a fake diamond. I equate choosing moissanite to choosing a sapphire, ruby, or any other gemstone. I think it's a great choice, and if you love it you should go for it. I do think it's tacky to try and pass off a moissanite as a diamond.

DH and I looked into moissanite a lot. In the end, he chose to buy a diamond. However, moissanite is getting a lot more popular and the topic comes up now and then on this forum. There are a few girls here who have moissanite engagement rings. I know Pandaburr has one.

Anyway, I think they're gorgeous and I do plan to get myself some moissanite jewelry in the future. The history of the stone is really neat, imo. Laughing

Thanks, ladies! The thing I really like about the moissanite is that it is a really hard gemstone. So if I do end up getting it I won't have to worry about it chipping or anything!

    This.

Moissanite comes up every few weeks it seems. It's a great option.

I think the general consensus is, as Jeana said, is don't try to pass it off as or feel like you have a fake diamond. Moissanite rings are great in their own right.

Heart, look back on some previous pages on this board. You'll find discussions on this topic. As well, look at the "Just Engaged and Proposals" board. It comes up a lot, there are a large number of people who do consider (and buy) moissanite.

Matt and I actually had this discussion this weekend.  I have decided that I am very interested in a Moissanite stone and when it's time we'll be making a trip down to the states to look at them (harder to find in Canada). I agree with Jeana though, that instead of thinking of it as a fake diamond, it is more of a gemstone.

There are many reasons to consider one: cost, durability & shine, no mining involved etc. but it is one of those things that you have to see one and try it on before you can make any decisions.

The one thing is though, do not tell anybody that it is a diamond when it isn't, be proud to wear such a beautiful stone.

I have one and I love it.  For one thing, I'm really proud that it's not a diamond.  Plus, it's really beatiful.  It's sparkly and flawless and just slightly yellow in some lighting.  PM me if you have specific questions.  I can send pictures if you want.

I've gone back and forth on it. I love how sparkly moissanite is, but I really didn't like the slight yellow to it. It wasn't much, so for most people it's likely not an issue, but I love diamonds because they remind me of ice, and I don't like my ice yellow Wink

That really depends on the quality of moissanite.  Low quality ones will look yellow-ish for sure.  Better ones, not so much.  The size matters, too.  The bigger it is, the more likely it is to face up yellow.  Check out the "enhanced" moissanite from moissaniteco if you're really worried.  It's $100 more per carat, but it's been subjected to a surface treatment that makes it look a couple shades lighter.  That's what I have.

Of the ones I looked at, it was only noticeable in direct sunlight from a certain angle. I think you really have to look to find it. In general, the round brilliant cuts are supposed to be the most clear.

I have a Moissanite E-ring and I love it.. The only time it's got a slightly yellow tinge is when its overcast or if I'm not standing in direct sunlight (like in the shade of a building or something).  I really dont think it's that noticeable.

I know I'm really late to this thread, but I just got engaged last weekend, and my fiance(!!) gave me a Lannyte diamond simulant.
I absolutely love it. I didn't want a diamond for my own reasons, and I was really interested in Moissanite. He lives in Lubbock, Texas, and was only able to find one example of moissanite. He was disappointed with that particular stone, which he felt had a green tinge. Somewhere along the way he discovered the Lannyte stone.
The one in my ring is internally flawless and a D grade, and was about $175 a carat!!
I really encourage anyone considering a diamond alternative to look into Lannyte

@Swazzle I'm aware. This thread pops up on Google searches; I posted on it in order to share my experience with whomever may be searching for information on Lannyte, as I myself was doing.
