WWYD? Career Related

Hey ladies,

I just wanted to see what opinions you have on a possible career change.  One side of me thinks this is a great opportunity.  Another thinks that it could be the biggest regret in my career.

Currently I work in a basement of a LARGE hospital.  I love where I work, and if I ever want to get that "hospital" feel ie: be around people, I can take a quick walk over to the main campus.  But for the most part I'm pretty isolated.  A few minutes ago our department's secretary just sent an e-mail announcing three full time positions available at a satellite office literally down the street from me.  Two are basically positions to be a liaison between the University that's affiliated with us and the hospital and the other position is like a senior position (which I would be more interested in)

I told bf about it, he's all for it of course since he's off on Thursdays and all he can think about is a lunch time quickie once a week.  I think it'll be good since it could save us some money on a dog walker and/or doggie day care since I can run home real quick to let the dog out.

On the other hand, it would be such a change from me to go from an 800 bed facility to basically a doctor's office.  Also, what if the doctors that work there are complete jerks?  What if I hate my co workers?  Also money would be a definite factor.  I just got a big raise with my annual review and I would hate to have it docked down because I moved positions.  Also I know the position is Monday through Friday but it doesn't specify what hours so essentially I could work until 8pm OR I could come in at 6am and get out at 2:30pm.

I e-mailed the manager of that office just to see what the day to day duties are with both different types of positions before I put in a formal application.  I also don't want to look like a career jumper since I've been in my current position now a little over a year but at my organization for 5 years.  If I applied for jobs outside of my organization it wouldn't really show me as a career jumper.  I don't know though to be honest with you.

So any opinions on this would be appreciated.  I thank you in advance!

  • I think you need to find out more about the positions before you can make a decision. There is no harm in finding out more and applying. If you decide it isn't for you don't accept if offered.

  • You always have the option of not taking the job, if you get offered it in the first place that is. :)

I know it can be scary thinking about change especially when it comes to your job but, I agree with Beth and I would find out more details before I make a final decision.

    Good luck!

  • It can't hurt to apply.  If they think you are a fit, interview.  Remember, it's not just them interviewing you; an interview is also a chance for you to get a feel for anything you want to know.  It is totally acceptable to ask about who you would be working with, the schedule, and (in a 2nd or 3rd interview) even the salary expectations.

An application and interview isn't a job offer, it's just a chance to feel it out and try it on for size.  Good luck!

I just got an e-mail back from the manager to call her about details of the positions.  Once I talk to her, maybe it'll help with the decision.  The only problem is that since the job in internal, calling about the position puts you in the running for it.  This manager really wants me to work for her too since I came from a more complex department before moving to this department.  I don't want to get the poor woman's hopes up!

  • I just got off the phone with the manager, everything is up in the air since it's a new satellite office.  She knows that the office will open @ 8am and 3 nights a week the office will stay open until 7pm.  Also, the position would be a promotion which is a good thing!  This quote "An application and interview isn't a job offer, it's just a chance to feel it out and try it on for size.  Good luck!" by zingy gave me a lot of confidence to set up an interview so that'll be next Friday at 9am.  Time to polish up the resume!

I get so stressed out about this because the position I came from to work in the department was the creme de la creme of my former department so when I came to this department there was a ton of gossip and side eyeing.  I told everyone I did it because I needed stability (my former position was 24/7/365 this one is M-F 8-4:30).  Even my former supervisor won't talk to me because I left her.  It wasn't even a bad reason!  Ugh.  At least I feel more comfortable telling people I have an interview in this department than my old department.

Thanks for the advice, and it's nice to remember that an interview isn't a commitment!  And I feel SO much less stress than before!!!!!

It was really bad.  I was having really bad anxiety about leaving.  She threatened to have meetings with me and our director to see what they could do to make me stay but it seemed more like she was bullying me than anything.  She was mad because she lost a good employee.  I'm the type that will do whatever it takes to help the team out, and I would work all holidays, nights, etc so people could be home with their families and I didn't ask for anything in return.  In the end I was working so much to stay away from home; at the time my home life sucked (abusive relationship, cheating boyfriend, the works).  When I met bf, I realized there was more to life than working 60 hours a week and decided I needed a stable schedule.  She thinks it was something more but it isn't.

In the end I think she was hurt more than anything, but that's her way of showing it by not talking.  It's weird though because my BFF and I both worked for her.  My bff left first since she needed a stable schedule because she was pg and they were fine with her leaving.  They even beg her to come back.  On the other hand, she wouldn't even ask me to help out when they were short a few months ago.  Oh well.  My manager now is super supportive that when she finds out I'm interviewing for this position she'll be happy.
