Wedding Dress Sample Size- What Size is it?

So I'm watching Say Yes to the Dress....which I've never done before... and it was mentioned that the average wedding sample dress is a size is 10.

Is that about right, ladies?

That might be a nice goal...I would love to fit into sample sizes someday.

It seem as if sample sizes for rings and shoes are both 7. However, I have a 5.5 ring size and a size 10 foot. I would love to finally be able to fit into a sample size.

10 is what I expereicned at bridal salons. DB had a ton of different sizes in nventory though. If you are larger than a 10 they use extenders so you can try the dress on. Depending on the brand though a wedding dress size 10 can be a street size 4 or 6 (but not always).

Whew...4 or 6 in street size...whew. What a difference. Lol.

What is the average "street size" for a bridal size 10? Ha

It really just depends on the designer. I think DB is true to size.

EDT: I am a street size 4 and I ordered a 6. I was mesured as having a size 2 bust, 4 waist, and 6 hips. the top will have to be taken in

In my experience, sample sizes were a street 4 or 6.  It does depend on the designer though.

When I went with my BFF, David's Bridal told us their sizes, well she said bridal sizes in general are about a size off. So she said a wedding dress size 10 is a normal person size 8. Proved to be true when BFF got her dress.

But depending on the designer it can be different. A lot of the higher end designers will range differently than that. I'm not sure how the Vera Wang for DB is sized, but designer brands tend to be smaller in wedding and non wedding sizes regardless.

For example, a Target Merona size 8 could differ from a gap size 8, will definitely differ from an Old Navy size 8 (Old Navy, in my experience, runs sooo large. Makes me feel great to fit into such a small size there), but generally all of those will be bigger than a designer jean which is sized 8. Or Marc Jacobs dress sized 8. So your Vera's, your Monique Lhuillier's, your Amsale's sample size 10's might very well be a "real person" size 6.

Geeze....Good thing I have at least a solid year before I even would consider trying on dresses. Wink

So the SYTTD that's I'm watching is for plus size gals...and sometimes it's so sad. I don't want to cry when trying on wedding dresses. :(

Oh man. This retail sizing game drives me nuts. Pretty soon every store will be so vastly different that we'll have to learn different sizes for every brand/store we try. They might as well make up their own names for sizes, like Starbucks. Tongue out

Boo about the sample sizes! Actually makes me feel glad I'm not at the point of trying anything on...I think I would cry. I would have been a sample size like 4-5 months ago. Not so much anymore with the medical stuff as I think I'm dangerously near the plus-size category as far as wedding dresses go.

Sidenote: it really irritates me that they made SYTTD: Big Bliss...why couldn't they just keep it interspersing plus-size girls with the non-plus-size girls on one episode?

Ooh, I want in on this.  Sorry I'm late, I've been at work.

The dresses we have in stock range from 10-14.  We also keep some plus sizes around in a certain designer so that bigger girls can get an idea of dresses too.

Simone Carvalli cuts a little bit closer to real street sizes, the rest of them can be as much as 4 sizes off.  For example, a girl I had today - she said she was a street size 0 and we ordered her a 4.

Sample sizes ordered will depend, I think, on what the cliental of the salon is.  If a salon gets a lot of bigger girls, they'll have bigger dresses.  We can always clip you into a dress that's too big.  Those that are too small are really, sometimes, too small.

They definitely vary. A couple places I went stocked multiple sizes. Others had size 10s that were probably about a real-life 6.

At David's Bridal, I told them I needed a size 4. The girl looked at me funny and brought a 6 which was too big. My actual dress (Camille LaVie) is a 4, and it turns out I should have ordered a 2. I just thought there is no way I should fit in a 2. Sizing is horribly inconsistent, and I found even the size charts aren't always all that helpful.

Don't even get me started on the sizing at Ann Taylor Loft. I'm a size 6 in a dress, and once I went in and tried on a dress that size, it was too big. Saleswoman gets me a 4, still too big. Long story short, I ended up in a size 0, and I am NOT a 0. Ladies, I have some hips!! It was such a waste of time (though I did end up buying it). Yes, it feels awesome when I buy one of their dresses, but then their pants are totally ridiculous and I'm a 10. How can I be a 0 in a dress and a 10 in pants at the same store. Ughz.

Ok ladies, I'm off for the night. Have a great one!

Bahahaha. I know what you mean. I am a size SMALL in their dresses right now, with all this weight gain. Uh, no. I am not small. I am tempted to bring my BFF, who is legit a size 4 in most stores, and see what she fits into there. Because if I am a size Small, she would be like XXXXXXXS. So weird. And in their pants, I'm a size 10 right now, which is not accurate based on weight gain, but MUCH closer. WTF.

I used to do a lot of online shopping because I didn't feel like traipsing around stores, but in the past few years, ALL the sizes are off in stores and I have no idea what size I am (at normal size and at current size).
