Camo & Purple???

I am trying to decide on colors for the wedding. My fiance hasn't asked for much, but he has asked for Mossy Oak vests. I was thinking to go with it, I would have the girls wear purple. Not a bright purple though, more of a deep purple. My gown is going to be white with red accents because I am wearing Ruby Slippers (think Wizard of Oz). I am thinking the bouquets will be red & orange with little bits of purple in. Any thoughts on how this may look? I've tried to get visuals online, but haven't found any pics.

Re: Camo & Purple???

  • It sounds like you're pulling a ton of colors in that are too different to be cohesive. Green and Purple and Red and Orange is a lot of colors to go with, I'd back off of one or two. If your gown is going to have red, I'd rethink the purple. Moss green, orange, and red could work together, or green, purple, and orange would be easy. Purple and red can work together, but they're both pretty strong colors and the green might look off if it's not done just right.

If you're dead set on going with the camo style vest remember that it's a fairly bold pattern for clothing and it will become a major visual thing, so I'd make the colors blend with it as much as possible.

    That sounds really...busy...

I noticed according to your profile, your wedding is next year at this time?

If so, what you're describing is going to look even more costume-like around Halloween time.

It's cool if your dress will have some red, however it's a very bold look.  It's cool if FI likes hunting...maybe could you do black vests (or something more neutral) for the guys with a Camo pocket square?

Dark purple is a pretty color for bridesmaids, but I'm not sure if I'd like the ladies in that color if the bride is having red on her dress. I would likely be more complementary if they wore red dresses or black dresses with a red sash.
  • Sounds like a rainbow exploded. It's way too many colors.

</div><div>It's a very bold choice to go along with another bold color like red. I'd most likely simplify your color choices if you're set on the red accents. Perhaps black dresses for the bridesmaids. Does your dress have a red sash or is the only part of your outfit that is red your red shoes? </div>

  • I agree that this would be way too busy. Even if your Fi wears moss green and not the camo; you two will look like a bad version of Christmas standing together. His green vest, the red in your dress. Then you add purple and orange to the mix?

Since red is just a bold color, try picking a suble accent color like gray or even fall colors like burnt orange and brown.

  • I agree with PP. I think purple, red, and camo are a bit much. I would decide if you'd rather have the red or the camo - not both. If you go with the camo, you can have brown or green or copper bridesmaid dresses, which would be nice in the fall (this could give you a lot of options for decorations at the reception). You could probably do your red shoes if they're under your dress and will only be seen a little, but I wouldn't include red in your dress if you go with the camo.

If you decide you have to have the red, I'd see if your Fi would be willing to compromise on tan or moss colored vests instead of camo, and then you can do coordinating colors for the dresses, and include red in the flowers to tie everything together.

    Good luck!
  • Yes, I am talking about the vests like in the picture. As far as my dress, my shoes will be red and little bits of red on the dress. I am looking at the Alfred Angelo dream gown collection. I have looked at pics online and red/purple/orange sound horrible together, but the pics looked nice when I saw them.
As far as red and green looking Christmasy, I don;t think that would be the case. The dress below is a little busy and NOT something I am going to wear, but it gives an idea of the 2 colors together.

Maybe a different color for the girls? I wanted a color that would look good on all of them. Below is a picture of red/purple/orange together to give an idea of what I was thinking.

  • Universally purple over red would be an easier color for most people to wear. You could go more neutral with the bridesmaid dress color, maybe a champagne color but I know that personally I wouldn't look good in it with my skin tone. But you may be able to find a shade that everyone likes.

Seeing it in your photo, the flowers that the girl in red is holding looks nice and with a deep purple dress would also look good. Or like I said in PP, black dresses would go too - making black your neutral. It's gonna be hard to coordinate the camo in any instance. Out of the options you listed, I choose the purple. But I personally would prefer black dresses with the flowers in the picture above to make the color scheme less busy. Your bridesmaids also have a higher chance of being able to wear the dress again too.
