Eating before workouts

I really need some advice!  I have been doing classes at the gym that start at 6:30pm.  I have been trying to eat a small dinner (grilled chicken and veggies or something like that) before I go to class.  Usually I finish eating around 5:45pm.

The problem is, when I push myself at the gym my stomach becomes very unsettled.  The food feels like I ate a little too close to my workout and it doesn't want to stay down.  Thankfully, this has never happened.

Should I start eating dinner at 8pm after I get home and just doing a small snack around 5pm?  How much time do you give yourselves between eating and exercise?

I could just really use some advice.  I hate to eat dinner so late, but it feels like my only option.
