Suggestions for a personal heart rate monitor

I am slowly working my way back into the gym after a year of bed rest, and my Dr wants me to keep a close eye on my heart rate. The machines at the gym are really off, and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good one to use.
I would like it under $50, lightweight, and durable.
   Thanks so much

I have a polar FT40F...its more in the $100 range of monitors, but Polar makes other less expensive models.  the chest strap is really comfortable and the computer has big numbers that are easy to read while I'm working out. This one can be used in a pool too.

I have a Timex. I got it off Amazon for about $50. I love it. It's really easy to use.

Mine tracks calories burned along with heart rate, but you can get cheaper ones that just track heart rate. Those are approximately $30.

I have the Polar FT4 and I LOVE it!!! I bought it for $66 and it was worth the investment. It also comes in different colors. Mine is pink :)
