I found the recipe below in a magazine and thought it might make a nice wedding favor. Before I make 50 jars of the stuff I'd like feedback
1. Is this something you would enjoy as a favor / does this sound yummy?
2. Most of our guests are from out-of-town. Is there a way around the TSA issue? Basically, I don't want TSA to confiscate the jars because there is doubt about them being 4 oz or smaller.
3. Do you think it would be too time consuming to cook and package 50 small jars?
4. Does anyone have know where I can buy small, airtight containers? I was thinking mason jars would work best.
Slow-Cooker Pear and Apple Butter
1. Peel, quarter and core 2 1/2 pounds Bartlett or Anjou pears (about 5) and 2 1/2 pounds McIntosh or Gala applies (about 5). In a food processor, finely grate fruit (in batches if necessary), then transfer to a 5 or 6 quart slow cooker. Stir in 1 cup packed dark-brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt and 1 cinnamon stick. Cover and cook on high, 4 hours.
2. Remove cinnamon stick and reserve. Transfer mixture to processor (in batches if necessary) and process until smooth. Return to slow cooker, along with cinnamon stick, and cook on high, uncovered, until mixture is thick and browned, 4 hours. Discard cinnamon stick and let mixture cool. Transfer to airtight containers and refrigerate up to 3 weeks, or freeze up to 3 months.
Makes 6 cups.
Re: Does this sound yummy? Plus additional questions
Try googling "jam jars" or try a local craft store. They might have the jars you need.
ps: I would love this as a favor! GL
The other problem is that these are supposed to be refrigerated or frozen, so I'm not really sure how travelling guests can take them.
If I were you, I would test it out next time you fly. Sometimes they get annoying when the size of the container is not written on the side or something. Fill a test jar with applesauce. I just googled and found 2 oz jars pretty easily:

More advice for you on making this recipie.
1. cut the fruit into 1/8ths and transfer to a pot with a tiny bit of water. Cook until soft.
Use a food mill such as this http://www.amazon.com/Oxo-1071478-Good-Grips-Food/dp/B000I0MGKE to remove the seeds and skin and turn the fruit into a sauce
This removes the need to transfer the food to the food processor at the end.
2. Once you have the sauce follow directions and put into a crock pot. Leave it there with the lid slightly ajar for 4+ hours. You can cook it until you think it's thick enough
3. Follow canning instructions and process the jars.
