Flowers

My colors are blue and cranberry - what to do with flowers and avoid a July 4th look

Hello,

I'm getting married on December 4th.  My Fl and I wanted seasonal colors so chose cranberry, blue, and silver.  I don't think we'll have much of an issue of it looking patriotic (which is fine, just not what we're going for) as in most cases the colors won't be right next to each other.  For centerpieces we're going to fill glass containers with water and cranberries and will use white or red flowers, for example.  The BM's are wearing navy blue that is definitely closer to blue than black.  It's this one in classic navy:

I had really wanted to use red flowers in the bouquets as I love color and contrast, but now I'm worried we will look like a flag.  What does everyone think?  In some pictures I've seen navy and dark red are lovely together. This cake for an example: cake

Some options I've considered include having them carry light blue flowers and I'd carry red, them with red and me with light blue, or just forget the red and we all carry light blue.

I'd love to see any pictures people have of photos in these color palettes, thanks!

This is black not navy but I love the contrast in this picture: http://www.ariadress.com/WeddingPages/Whitehurst.htm

Part of your post is cut off, so I couldn't read it all, but if I understand correctly is what flower colors will keep your blue and cranberry wedding colors from looking like a patriotic red, white, and blue theme?

A mix of jewel tone colors would look great against either red or dark blue dresses or table linens.  Deep reds, oranges, purples, a touch of gold, etc... would really pop.  SImilar to the pictures you posted.

Cranberry is a deep red color and fits in nicely with your December wedding.   If your blue is a deep jewel tone then your wedding will not look 4th of Julyish if you use ivory colored flowers.  Even with a rich navy color, the white will look nice with the dresses.

You could use silver for an accent color, or a deep forest green shade which will be available that time of year.

It is hard to read your post as it is cut off.

Thanks for the responses!  That's strange my post is cut off-I can read it all.  Well the long and the short of it was that the BM's are wearing dark blue/navy and I'd like for them to carry dark red flowers, but am worried it will look too flag like.  I was looking for opinions and any pictures people have to see if it's an issue.

Just in case it didn't work in the original post you can see the bridemaid's dress and color here (classic navy): http://www.jcrew.com/wedding/Wedding_Bridesmaid/dresses/cottoncady/PRDOVR~17404/17404.jsp

    Thanks!

I know what you mean! We've been planning on deep red + light blue accents for our November wedding & are also trying to avoid the patriotic look.

For us we're incorporating extra accents of chocolate.

I would agree it would help to add another color like gold or some shade of green.

    Good luck!

Your colors are too deep to look "patriotic".  If you were just doing red and blue, and would be worried, but the deepness of your colors will help you avoid it.  Try googling "cranberry and deep blue weddings"  You never know what you will find!

You're over thinking this.  As long as you're not having a barbeque and a parade, people won't think you're having a 4th of July wedding.  Just make sure to use darker shades and not the Old Glory colors.

Thanks everyone.  I'm definitely over thinking it!  But that's what I do even when the subject matter isn't a wedding  Wink

The reason it came up at all was a couple people made that comment to me, then I searched for pictures on line of dark blue dresses and red flowers, and I really couldn't find anything-and I thought maybe there was a reason why!  I talked to one of my (very fashion/design conscious) BM's and she agreed it's a non issue for exactly the same reason-dark/depth of colors.  I think then they will carry dark/deep red flowers and I will carry light blue hydrangea.  Hopefully it's pretty!
