I can't really vote without knowing your crowd. Generally, the more upbeat the music, the better the party. But it's about what your guests want. I used to DJ weddings, and there are several times I can think of where if I played fast stuff, nobody cared -- but slow songs had the dance floor packed.

If you're having a DJ, and he or she is any good at his or her job, they should be able to read your crowd and go with the flow.

I am doing an Ipod wedding so my response might be different. But I am doing mostly older songs and slow songs for the first hour and with just a few newer fast songs. Then as the older crowd leaves I will start to play the heavier and more dancy stuff.

Including our first dance, I think our DJ played only 3 slow songs.  He read the crowd and kept the dancing going.  Sometimes, throwing in slow songs too often can really kill a mood.  If your crowd is really into the music, I suggest limiting the slow songs.
