Prices for DJ's

I was wondering what a good average price is for a DJ.  I live in Michigan and have one in mind, but I wanted to check with pricing and what to expect/what might be on the high end.

We're paying $1200 in the DC area. It's more than I wanted to spend, but he's a club DJ (not a traditional wedding DJ), so he'll have turntables and a diverse collection of music. We didn't want the guy in a tux with CDs playing YMCA and talking all night... we wanted people to feel like they were at a party!
