NWR: Baby superstitions

Did/do any of you have any superstitions when it comes to babies?  Whether it's before TTC, during pregnancy or after having the baby.

I heard one Jewish superstition is that nothing baby related can be brought into the home until the baby is delivered and since we have such a diverse group, I was wondering if anyone had some.

Wow, I have never heard that one.

Hmmm, I can't think of any except of the ones everyone has heard of:  if you carry the baby high it's a girl, low it's a boy; cats will smother the baby because it smells like milk, etc.

I have heard that the sperm that makes a boy baby is faster, and the female sperm is slower but lives longer.  So if you are TTC and want a girl, you should have sex like the day before ovulation, and if you want a boy, right at ovulation.

Who knows if this is true or even possible?  I think it's probably just fate.

I personally dislike the one about cats smothering babies.  My ILs apparently really believe that and one has a doctorate and the other a masters.  Ugh.

I've just heard that you're not supposed to reveal the name really.

I know teachers who won't consider certain names because of former students.  One of my friends will never have a daughter named Lauren.

The person teaching our Natural Family Planning class taught told us that too. DH was very excited, he wants all boys (note to self... entice him with sex before ovulation)  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-innocent.gif" border="0" alt="Innocent" title="Innocent" />

    Hi Tiffany *waves*

I don't really buy into any of the above but I'm very leery of anything baby related because I know we will have troubles TTC but I do like the idea of not bringing anything into the house.  We won't be spilling the beans on a name, especially because we don't plan on finding out what we are having.  DH has told his bro our middle name though.

I don't know how I feel about twins.  It would be killing two birds with one stone but don't you deliver early, by c-section and are on bed half the time?  Gah, the bed rest would drive me batty.

You don't do it before 7 months and there was something about not having people who had miscarriages attend. Brings bad luck. Granted, I don't think I would ever do that. I'm not sure I believe all the superstitions but I do agree about not naming them with certain names.  I will never name my boy anything that ends in "den"!  "Aiden" "Braden" "Hayden", ect!  Those were the worst boys ever at the daycare and my nephew is Hayden and he is a handful also!

We have already told our name to people even though we aren't pregnant but that is because the name means a lot to both of us and my whole family.  If we have a boy (guess we will be trying right at ovulation) we are going to name him after my step dad and DH's dad who have both passed.

FMIL keeps hinting at the idea of kids right after the wedding. That is not FI's and I plan at all.  We did it become acceptable to say things like that!

I've heard that you shouldn't refer to the baby by the name before they're born - for example, you should not address presents to Firstnameofbaby, it should be for Baby Lastname.  My mom is full of little gems like this... I'm sure when we start TTC they'll all come out, but this is the only one I've heard.

I like the yams thing... I want twins.  I agree it would be harder up front, but I'm worried that I'll chicken out when it comes to having baby #2, and I'd really like two so I don't have an only child...

I don't have anything to add, but I do have an interesting story.  When my mother was pregnant with me, her doctor told her that she was having one big boy.  She went into labor and went to the hospital.  Every time she would have a contraction, my heartbeat would slow down.  They had an emergency C-section.  When she came out of the anesthesia, the doctor told her she didn't have a boy.  In fact, she had two girls!  Imagine her surprise!!

The bed rest probably wouldn't bother me so much as the never having another good night's sleep or a minute to just sit and try to remember what my name is.

I really have no superstitions... I really do believe that it's fate.

But, I will say this... my daughter was born January 10th... and my FI (about half way through my pregnancy) said, "Wouldn't Irish Twins be fun??"  (Irish twins = siblings born in the same calendar year, but aren't actual twins)... I laughed and said "yep, if you want to carry the next one!"

With that said, after the first month, he voted against irish twins, or two kids really close in age at all!

James' family is like this also.  At Thanksgiving, we were at his grandparent's house for about 3 hours, and were bombarded no less than 8 times - and most of that was just me when he wasn't near by!  We do want kids in the semi-near future, but not until I have a job where I don't work so much, so please, just ease up and be patient!  And that is what I tell them... and they keep going.  It's tiring.

Seriously the One and ONLY name my son's father and I agreed on was Ethan. Not so common in 2001 when we were thinking of baby names...Ethan Allen, Ethan Hawke, one of the Survivors winners was Ethan...but then 2002 came. I was on a message board, 6 of us were due in April, 5 of us were having boys, 4 of us were naming ours Ethan. It his the top 10 list out of nowhere! Oh the anger!!!

In the event that we decide to have children, it will be one and done...I'll keep the sweet potatoes tip to myself. If I pass that on, FI would put them on my plate for each meal so that we could have as many as possible all at once to conceive the soccer team that he secretly longs for.
I guess at that point I could wear a Kate wig to remind him of what kind of train wreck that would all turn into.

I never heard that you should call the baby by its' eventual name before the birth, thats pretty interesting.
