Engagement Party - Who matters?

Hi, my parents said that they would throw my fiance and I an engagement party. However, I have an older sister (who I guess will be by default my Maid of Honor - I haven't asked yet). But she is out of the country/busy for the next weekends of about 5 months. I don't want to wait until September to have an engagement party (we want to get married in the Spring of 2014). Do I have to make sure she's free to attend?

    September is too long to wait. The point of an engagement party is to announce your engagement.  By then, you will have been engaged for 6 months.  Nobody is required to attend any pre-wedding functions. I would have the party now or decline it.
