Dying Sola Flowers?

Hi there everyone!  FI and I are doing our own centerpieces, and in order to cut back on last minute scrambling we are using sola wood flowers.  Sola wood is a very very soft wood- the flowers almost feel like styrofoam.  I want to experiment dying them our colors- any ideas from experienced DIYers on how to do that?  I am thinking maybe food coloring- I think RIT dye may be too harsh.  Maybe also watered down paint?  I read a very vague instruction on an indian web site that seemed to advise that method.

Any ideas?  Thanks so much for your help!

  • Sorry I can't help but where did you get the flowers?

  • save on crafts- love that site!!!!!  My $900 order for all my centerpieces is on its way!  Made me a little ill to place that order, but I try to remember all the money I am saving not using a florist!

  • awesome -- thanks.  do you mind posting a pic of the flowers when they come in?  I'd love to see what they look like in real life :)

  • They honestly look just like that- so pretty!  we ordered samples of everything before we decided on what we were going to use and placed our big order.  I will take a pic of them tonight though and show you.

  • Balsa wood is used for making all sorts of things and it is easily colored, http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=258979 here is another thread about doing so. A friend of mine is having me do the florals for her small wedding and has virtually no flower budget so I'm trying to convince her to go with sola flowers too. I'd love to see your results if you do end up doing it, hopefully those will sway her in that direction. Good luck! and congratulations.
