Anyone make a flower girl tutu dress?

I have seen some pretty good videos on how to do it and it looks fairly easy.  Where did you all order your tulle from?  what kind did you use? What sort of bodice did you construct?  and how much tulle you wound up using. Just trying to see if there is anything im over looking and would love some of your advice.

Re: Anyone make a flower girl tutu dress?

  • We are making one for our flower-girl but haven't started it yet. We plan on getting the tulle from Joann Fabrics (although I am sure you could get it cheaper at some other places but I like to see the colors and everything in person). We are going to make the skirt separate from the bodice. Our flower-girl will be 4, so I wanted to make the bodice attached to a pair of shorts. That way she can run and play before pictures/ceremony without possibly wrecking the skirt.  The amount of tulle you would use is dependant on how full you want the skirt and how tall the flower-girl is.
  • I used 12 yards of tulle for a full length dress on my 4'1" FG. I just bought the tulle from HL, I lined it with poly satin I got from WM for like $3. There really isn't much to it even if you're not a seamstress.
  • You can get tulle from most any fabric store in an array of colours for pretty cheap.  This type of skirt is really easy to make if you have a sewing machine and can do the most basic seams on it.

    My tips would be:
either line the skirt or get leggings or tights for the flower girl because wearing tulle is uncomfortable.
make the top out of a stretchy fabric so its easy to fit.  or get a body suit for her to wear underneath
the way to make the skirt really full is to gather stitch each layer of tulle individually before attaching them to the waistband.
If you want to make it even fuller, before you gather stitch the layers, make an extra ruffle of tulle for all or some of the layers.  To do this cut a narrow piece of tulle, 150% the width of the peice your using as a skirt and sew it on the "good" side (not the inside) of the layer of tulle skirt.  The bottom of the ruffle and the bottom of the skirt can line up, or an easier way is to sew the ruffle at the bottom of the skirt.  This is adding a seam to some, or all of the layers of tulle, and therefore a bit more work, but it will give the skirt maximum poof.
The great thing with tulle is  that it isn't expensive.  Get some, play with it.

    YOU CAN DO IT!

I got my tulle at: ribbonretreat.com - they have all kind of colors and it's fairly inexpensive.
