What is a catechism?

Don't know if this is the right forum for this ?, so please forgive me if it's not.Our church requires that we meet with a mentor couple a few times before the wedding and last night, our couple said they were going to get us a Catholic catechism as a wedding gift, since we don't have one.What is this?

    I think it is a book of the basic beliefs of Catholocism. The one I had when I was being confirmed in the Presbyterian church was in question and answer format. In any case, it is a book of the tenants of a religion that you should be familiar with if you subscribe to that religion.

    Yes its a book...when I 'coverted' to the Catholic faith when I was younger, it was book you had to read before you could recieve communion...bascially outling everything to do with being Catholic. That's if I remember correctly...
