Pots and Pans Dillemma: Stainless Steel Vs. Non Stick

My FI and I are going to register for our pots and pans among other things at Williams Sonoma. He's not too into picking our stuff out, so I have been choosing everything. I first I registered for Calphalon Slide and Sear Set for about $995, but I then changed it to the regular Calphalon Set after my mom told the Slide and Sear was too expensive and no one is going to buy it for us.

Recently my FMIL has gotten it into my FI's head that All Clad Stainless Steel Pots and Pans are the best and nonstick sucks and is dangerous....I'm sure stainless stee is the best, but they cost about $1500 or more for a decent set. HIs response to the price was " We'll buy them ourselves". Very fustrating!

So my question is: Have any of you had experience with All Clad Pots and Pans? Are they really that awesome? Are they easy to cook with? (I'm afraid I'll burn a lot more meals having cooked on non-stick all my life) and Are non-stick pans really that dangerous? Thanks for your input!!
