Just be the bigger person and let it slide. You have a long married life and it's not just to your husband - it's to your in-laws, whether you like it or not. It may just be smarter to hold your tongue...but she needs to adjust. She is just probably very attached to her son. Maybe include her a bit - not to make decisions, but to just ask her opinions casually. She may appreciate that and it may soften her blows when she's emotional, you know?

Please let fi kno that giving mom details about your arguments is only going to fuel her resentment toward you. If he is an only son, who has had a close relationship with his mom, she probably sees you as a competitor. That's sad. I hope your wedding planning includes some pre-marital counseling. Fi is going to have to learn how to set boundaries for mom.

You may have an FI problem. Please visit the website www.motherinlawstories.com it is a good place for support and you may want to read up before you decide to get married.

My advice is to make sure that you stop talking about anything wedding related to FMIL.  And tell FI to do the same.  Who knows why she's being so difficult, but hopefully one day she'll want to be more involved (and in a more supportive way).

With over a year to go, you don't want to be constantly stressed out over it.  Good luck!

Are you sure she wasn't upset because she wanted to be invited to go with you?

Why dont you ask her why she was upset when you both mentioned a venue.  Maybe she just feels left out and wanted to be a part of the experience.
