Wedding Customs & Traditions Forum

Why do we marry the way we do?

You know there are so many traditions related to the weddings, the white wedding dress, the bouquet of flowers, the cake, but how do these customs get their first start? Why do we marry the way we do? Everything we do when we say: "I do." is magnificent, from the kiss to the toss of the bridal bouquet. I do love when they cut the cake, my favorite part of the wedding is the ceremony, I feel tremendous delighted to announce you husband and wife. Despite the romantic overtones of weddings today, few traditions began with promise in mind. Ancient wedding were about property, plain and simple, uniting two families meant more land for each, therefore more power. Believe it or not, backing trouble days, the easiest way to win a bride was to kidnap her, if a man got a lady away from her family long enough, well, he was pretty much married to her. Grow old along with me!

  • I also agree that it's tradition, and people still like having that piece of paper showing their relationship is legally and in many cases, religiously sanctioned. There's the belief that children born to married couples will grow up more secure as divorce makes it harder for a parent to decide they don't want to be a parent.
  • I'm obscessed with this post.  Why?  Everything from the subject to your post.  I look at words and say: "Wow."  You have posted nine more, which I feel tremendous delighted to read.  Despite the modern day snark in posts, did you know posts began as sharing of government secrets?  You would were not wedding posts!  Read replies with me!

I wish my ex had this belief.

OP - Why do we marry the way we do?  Because the wedding industry says we MUST HAVE, MUST HAVE, MUST HAVE everything they say we do.  And enough silly brides bought into it.

Other than that I got nothing.

OP is a spammer, probably for a Chinese knock-off site based on her inability to use correct English grammar.  "White wedding dress" in the first sentence is a link, presumably to whatever knock-off site she's trying to subtly advertize.
