floating lanterns-sending wishes

so, we are going to be in or near santa rosa ca, and I was wondering if they allowed anywhere releasing floating lanterns at the end of out ceramony or during the celebration.  If not, would they let us tie them to a long string and release them like a balloon and they could just float to a certain hieght and linger...??  my sisters BF is a firefighter and he will stand by with a fire extinguisher lol... Im trying to find out info about them but we REALLy want them as part of our ceramony as they mean a lot to us..

This doesn't really answer your question but I worry about the pollution after you release them.  Where do they go?  There is no was to collect them again so they become someone else's garbage problem.

Contact the local DEC and they will have an answer; keep in mind that if you are near an area of protected wildlife or marine life, you may need permits to do this or may be disallowed altogether. It sounds beautiful, don't get me wrong, but realistically their priority will be making sure it isn't mistaken as food for an unsuspecting turtle.
