Usher Attire

Has anyone ever been to a wedding where the Ushers didn't wear tuxes? Did it look alright? My FI and I are at odds about this situation.  I don't think they need to wear tuxes as long as they match and to do this I am going to buy them matching shirts.  FI thinks they need to wear tuxes.  Any thoughts and ideas would be wonderful. Thanks Ladies!

I actually have NOT been to a wedding where the ushers did not wear a tux...but I  am in a very small minority on this board. Almost everyone else has mostly seen ushers wear suits or even nice pants with a nice shirt.

For what it's worth, I don't think ushers have any need to wear a tux, even though I have never seen any different. HTH!

  • I think what the ushers wear depends on the formality of your wedding. If it's black tie and all the men will be in tuxes, they definitely should be too. If it's formal, they should probably be in tuxes. But if it's not super formal - BMs not necessarily in long dresses, guests in more cocktail-type attire - then suits or shirt and tie should be just fine.
  • I can only remember one wedding where there were ushers that were not also groomsmen ... and this was a Navy wedding, so the ushers and groom and groomsmen wore the white dress uniforms. The civilian Best Man wore a black tux. If there were any other weddings I attended that had separate ushers (as opposed to the groomsmen just escorting people to their seats), I don't remember them.

It's your call. I don't think you'd be out of line to ask them to rent a tux, but if you want a personal opinion then I wouldn't feel right asking anyone outside of the bridesmaids and groomsmen to rent/buy a specific outfit. If we were having ushers (which we're not), I would probably ask them to wear a nice dark suit and a white shirt, and maybe I'd buy them ties.

I would talk to them and see how they feel. If they don't own nice suits, then it might just be easier for them to rent tuxes than to go out and purchase new suits (although every guy can use a nice suit, and they can get future use out of suits). Talk to them and see what they'd be comfortable in and what kind of budgets they're working with.

  • The ushers at our wedding didn't.  The GM wore tuxes to match DH but the ushers (my two 14 year old cousins) wore dress khakis, sport coats, and ties.  There wasn't a need for their parents to spend the money on tux rentals, but they were dressy and "coordinated" with the WP.

  • My wedding is the only one I've ever been to in which the ushers wore tuxes.  I've mostly seen them wear suits.
  • Thanks Ladies.
Like I said in my original post...I will be buying them their shrits since I am wanting them to look the same.
I appreciate all of the advice
