i don't want a wedding dress

I don't want to get the traditional wedding gown for my wedding this summer. I had considered a white bridesmaid dress or even a bridesmaid dress in our wedding colors.

Other than wedding boutiques, do you have any suggestions of where i could go to look for a less formal but nice (and short - think just to the knee) dress for my very informal ceremony?

  • Nordstrom might be good to check out, they have a bridal dept but also have a lot of pretty formal dresses too.

Also, Anthropologie has an online Bridal branch:  http://www.bhldn.com/
It's good for vintage-y stuff, and a little different than most bridal shops.  They have shorter bridal and BM dresses.

  • I'm in the same boat. I wanted to wear pale pink and feel like a wood nymph (in aesthetic, not the kind with wings).

I tried 3-5 bridal shops looking at their bridesmaid dresses but they had VERY SMALL selections of bridesmaid stuff (and even couldn't get in more via trunk shows, etc). Very disappointing.

Cicada is a wedding and formalwear shop downtown that will do partly custom work. They have lots of patterns and let you mix/match parts & colors. They were a decent option but I didn't love their skirt patterns for the style I wanted. Close but not quite there.

I tried Nordstrom formalwear, not bad. Macy's formalwear, also decent. I tried shops like Jessica McClintock that cater to the prom crowd (a bit young and cheapish looking).

I looked all over Etsy but didn't fall in love with anything. In the end I decided to sew my own! It's exactly what I wanted. Pink, tulle, whimsical. If you're not up for that there are several custom dress makers in town. Check yelp for reviews.

Good luck and don't compromise on your dress awesome.
  • I ran across this shop which has quite a big selection of bridesmaid like dresses in lots of colors including white and ivory. http://www.bellabridesmaid.com/#p=-1&a=-1&at=-1 They are mostly short dresses and I believe you can go in and try them on which is nice.
JCrew also has a selection of short and simple dresses that still fall under their bridal collection.
