Annoyed -- African American Make -up artist

Hey ladies,

This is the first time I am posting on this board... but I just needed to vent!!! I am a black woman from Boston and it seems impossible to get a make -up artist who has experience with darker skins tones.. I recently had a trial with the sweetest lady who said she had tons of experience. I am brown skinned, and this lady took the darkest color she could find in her palette caked my face up with it... and all of a sudden I am three tones darker. She said she had to match it with the rest of my skin and that the chest is usually darker than the face. i dont know about you ladies buy chest is acutllay a little lighter than my face so I am not sure where she got that from. In any case it was horrible. I am now have been googling make-up artist for weeks, and I cant find one artist who has a picture of a black one on their page. REALLY!! what is up with that?!! Have you ladies encountered this problem?

Sorry to hear that. I was frustrated in looking for a MUA myself to the point I had to DIY. I don't live in the most diverse area, so I just practiced, practiced, practiced until I perfected what I wanted on the wedding day doing it myself. I watched videos, read articles, sampled different makeups, etc.

Good luck, but if you can't find anyone, go the DIY route.

Bless you hunny! Have you tried doing it yourself? Some people are dead set against this, but there are tons of videos on YouTube that are step by step. Some even tell you what products to use. Also, you could try a makeup counter at one of the malls like, MAC, sephora or Bobbi brown. Those girls sometimes do make up on the side, some girls here and on other boards had good experiences with that. And Welcome to the BEST board by the way!

I say DIY anyway. then you get to buy new makeup that u can use for awhile for the same price that youd end up paying someone! Practice with drug store makeup then when you have perfected your look, buy the good stuff. or go to the mall and have someone do ur make at the makeup counter and get tips from them

Well Hello & welcome. I know that sucks but from my experience even the Mac girls did a bad job on my make up & since I don't usually wear any at all it broke me out. The last time I had a decent experience was with Mary Kay but I don't know how much they charge

I say visit your local makeup counters in the mall. I just went and had a free application this weekend and this Caucasian girl did my makeup waaayyy better than the black girl from MAC that I currently have booked.

I would try Bare Escentuals in the mall if there is one in your area. I was pleasantly surprised how good of a job they did. I do not wear any make up...thought I looked like a clown but in pictures, it was better than I thought. I just had to get use to the make-up. If not, definitely try yourself...there are so many videos on YouTube for applying on make-up. Keep us updated and Tell us what you decide.
