Setting up our wedding

Ok so I was trying to be undercover and find out what the "others" were doing for their weddings but its just sooooooooo BORING over there in HET LAND! *S*

What traditions are you following? Which ones are you throwing out? Do you have to serve a meal at a 6  pm wedding? Why can't you serve heavy appetizers?

Isn't this about claiming and reframing our day? I'm going to make sure guests are fed, comfortable, etc but really??? *EG*

is the ceremony at 6 or the reception at 6? that makes a huge difference. can you move it back to 7 ceremony and 8 reception? you could prob do heavy appetizers if you push it back. Also it depends on what you consider heavy. do you want a cocktail hour while you are off getting pics done? how long do you plan on having the apps available? are you doing cake? just some things to consider. We followed:

    • • Ceremony held in a synagogue, officiated by a rabbi
    • • Long ivory dresses with trains, veils, tiaras, and even opera gloves.
    • • Bouquets (although ours were arm bouquets rather than "the club")
    • • Wedding rings (plain gold bands, with no engraving or stones, in accordance with Jewish tradition)
    • • Chuppah (Jewish wedding canopy)
    • • Ketubah (formal Jewish marriage contract)
    • • Seven blessings
    • • Stamping on the glass at the end of the ceremony
    • • First dance

    We skipped:

    • • Engagement rings.
    • • Engagement photos.
    • • Welcome bags/OOT bags.
    • • Bridal party, other than maid of honour and "dude of honour."
    • • Special attire for MOH and DOH (great acronym!). The MOH wore a bridesmaid's dress she got for a different wedding. The DOH wore a business suit he already owned.
    • • Being escorted down the aisle.  We just walked together down the aisle, holding hands.
    • • Limo.
    • • STDs.
    • • Placecards and table numbers (luncheon after the ceremony was small seat-yourself affair in the private dining room of a restaurant, and at-home reception was cocktail style seating).
    • • Anything monogrammed.
    • • I DO letters.
    • • Chargers.
    • • Any clothing that said "bride."
    • • RSVP envelopes (We had online-only RSVPs, using an RSVP Web site designed by my wife.)
    • • Aisle runner.
    • • Flowers for the ceremony location, other than bouquets for us and MOH, and bout for DOH. We had pew bows and gold chair sashes, but the only other decoration was our ketubah and the chuppah.
    • • Wedding musician. We compiled our own CD.
    • • Ring pillow/unity candle/ceremony accessories, other than the chuppah.
    • • Gift bags.
    • • Rehearsal dinner. Most of the attendees were staying in one big house, and we just ordered in pizza the night before.
    • • Being announced at the reception.
    • • All "special" dances other than the first dance.
    • • Flowers for the reception.
    • • Reception dresses. We bustled up our wedding gowns and wore those to the luncheon and at-home reception.
    • • Candy buffet.
    • • Disposable cameras. Most of our friends have cameras, and we just asked that they bring them and upload the photos to our photo-sharing website afterward.
    • • Bouquet and garter tosses.
    • • Wedding coordinator, DOC, etc.
    • • Honeymoon.

As for whether you can have a heavy apps reception after a 6:00 PM ceremony, the question is when people would normally get dinner.  If you're in an area in which dinner is normally at 9:00 or later, you could have a heavy apps reception after a 6:00 ceremony, but you might find people leaving at 7:30 or 8:00 to go get dinner.  If you're in an area in which dinner is normally at around 6:00, then people would be trying to make a dinner of your apps.  You might well find that supplying enough apps for this purpose would be more expensive than just supplying dinner.
