Canada

We're coming to the east coast!

I'm now about 90% sure that we're going to come vacation on the east coast - yay!

We'll be there from around June 20-27 (give or take). Rather than driving, I think we'll be flying into and out of Halifax.

Any tips? Where should we spend our time? I think that our itinerary right now includes a day or two in Halifax, a few days in Cape Breton, a day or two around Amherst, maybe some time in NB (though I don't know very much about NB) and some time on PEI.

Any and all advice welcome... all I know is that we want to eat lots!

Ahhh!! You'll have such a good time!  I'm from Hali...here's what I would reccomend...

    I always reccomend Peggy's Cove - it's about 30 mins from Hali.  It's BEAUTIFUL
While in Hali I'd say visit Citadel Hill ( www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/ns/halifax/index.aspx) for sure.
Wander the waterfront and historic properies (on the waterfront).
Point Pleseant Park and the Public Gardens are beautiful!!

If you're up for a trip head to Lunenburg(www.lunenburgns.com/">www.lunenburgns.com/) - the Bluenose II is docked there and they have some beautiful historic houses and great shops.

Any part of Cape Breton is BEAUTIFUL.  The Cabot Trail is lovely - a walk along part of that would be nice.  Watch for Coyotes, please.

PEI is a fantasic vacation spot too!  The beaches are to die for...white sand, blue water...it's wonderful!
If you're into, or were into, Anne of Green Gables you can see LM Montgomery's house - Green Gables.  It's kind of neat.

If you have any questions let me know.  I live for Atlantic Canadian roadtrips - I've been ALL over NS,NB,PEI and NL!

If you've never been to the Hopewell Cape (flowerpot rocks) I suggest GO. It's about 45 minutes south of Moncton, which is about 30 minutes north of the border with NS, and then you can go east from Moncton on out to PEI =) (hwy 15 goes right past my place, lol)

Want to go to a Big Fat Cape Breton wedding on the 26th? I always take visitors to Baddeck at the start of the Cabot Trail. There are loads of small shoppes, the most beautiful scenery (on the Bras d'Or Lakes), and small enough to explore these and museums, trails, etc. on foot. The accommodations are all gorgeous. We usually take a 2 hour cruise on the catamaran Amoeba to check out the marine life, eagles, and the estate of Alexander Graham Bell. Worth the visit!

DO I! lol - how big and fat is a Big Fat Cape Breton wedding, exactly?

Actually we're planning on spending the first few days (20-24 ish) on Cape Breton island (though we haven't booked anything yet... so that could change). A friend suggested staying in Beddeck, so all of those suggestions sound good!

It's 350 people fat! If you are in town, please be my guest and come dancing. On the East Coast, everyone is welcome, and we'll show you a wonderful time.

Eat at the Lower Deck in Halifax! And ditto Lunenberg - check out the Annapolis Valley too. You can go whale watching out by Grand Manan Island - I did that when I was doing a summer french course at Université Sainte-Anne one summer. Very cool, although I am leary of what those sightseeing boats do to the whales.

Oh, and given your love of food, be sure to get some Digby scallops!

If you go up to NB near Moncton, head east 20 minutes to Parlee Beach!! It's my paradise (although I am from/live in Halifax) and has the warmest water north of South Carolina. It's beautiful and you can't come to Atlantic Canada without a good beach day.  It's actually where my ceremony is :)

Ditto most of what's been said :) Peggy's Cove, Cape Breton, definitely Hopewell Cape (that's where the famous pics of the Fundy tides are most often from). If you pass through Moncton check out the clock for the tide coming in - not worth a special trip really, but if you are already in the area I think its neat.

As for PEI... Cavendish beach is the most famous, and beautiful. Also use your park pass to go to Cavendish East for some great photos of the beach and cliffs. Rustico is a very cute fishing village with a nice boardwalk. My favourite lobster is from Rustico where you can watch the boats come in, bought already cooked - flavour beats any of the lobster suppers/restaurants, though there are some good ones. Greenwich in the East is also in the national park, has gorgeous trails, and if you are up for the walk the beach and dunes there are absolutely breath-taking, and totally unique. If you do go up to the East point, stop at Basin Head and check out the 'singing' sands (when you scuff your feet it squeaks) and bridge jumping.

Cow's ice cream has a lot of locations and really yummy flavors. Frosty Treat in Kengsinton is a dairy bar with the creamiest ice cream you will ever taste, and really yummy greasy everything else (burgers, fish burgers, fried clam burgers, etc.). If you like cycling, rent bikes and hit the Confederation Trail, my fave part is around St. Peters. Canoeing near Panmure Island is also fantastic. For arts & antiques, Victoria by the Sea is great. If you want to see a beach with really red sand, I've always liked Chelton Beach, but any of the south shore are nice.

If you are coming out to see the 'Flower Pots' in Hopewell Cape (Hopewell, Rocks) keep driving 30minutes to Alma. You can view the Bay of Fundy (finalist for the 7 wonders of Nature) and see the World's highest Tides. Make sure to have a lobster they are the best you'll ever have! Here you can also visit Cape Enrage which was voted one of the best view's in Canada. Alma is also directly beside Fundy National Park. You can go kayaking, walk the beach, view the fishing community, hike in the National park, try dulse, eat lobster or bacon wrapped scallops, try local wine at the Waterside winery, try a row boat and fish trout, camping, horseback riding, shark fishing. Let me know if you need anymore info

I agree with basically everything everyone has said here. The best thing about the east coast is that you can kick back and relax because really, we're in no hurry. :)

definitely check out Hopewell cape and Alma in NB . At Hopewell, you can kayak around the rocks, or wait until it's low tide and you can walk on the ocean floor.

Cavendish Beach is LOVELY but so is Parlee Beach.
    ENJOY!!! :)
