To Duet or Not Duet for the Meal

I am considering giving options for the meal on the invitation but in order to truly give my guests a choice, we may offer:

1) Seafood (Either Salmon or Jumbo Shrimp) & Chicken Dish and
2.) Petit Filet and Chicken Dish

What are thoughts on this?  Is this too many options choices and should I stick with just 1.) Chicken and 2.) Filet (or Fish)?

Re: To Duet or Not Duet for the Meal

  • I personally don't think option 1 sounds like it goes together.  Maybe offer option 2 and a vegetarian dish?  I don't think anyone would be unhappy of getting both the chicken and the filet, but if you offer fish as your option 2, you've got your vegetarians covered.

  • Yeah, I would do option 2 and then offer a veg. dish if nec.

  • I like the 1st option
  • Why not give each meat as an option?

    a) Filet
    b) Chicken
    c) Fish
    d) Vegetarian
  • I don't think chicken and seafood pair very well, the textures are too similar.  If you're going to do a duet thing, I would do a surf and turf, seafood and a red meat.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I've only ever seen duets as surf and turf (some sort of seafood and steak), which I think works well. But I don't really think steak and chicken, or chicken and seafood go all that well together.
  • Not all vegetarians eat seafood!

  • Those duet plates are a nightmare. I won''t eat anything that is even near fish. Just have 2 separate choices.
  • I would skip the chicken with the seafood option. Do a duet if you want of chicken and filet, but I say you need to include a veggie option. Maybe cut out the seafood altogether.
  • If you have a guest who is allergic to seafood, they won't be able to eat anything on the same plate as the seafood.  So I think it's better to have them separated.
  • I have rarely if ever seen a fish and chicken duet. People are very particular about what is served with their fish/meat and there may be religious or other dietary restrictions to consider with this pairing. Have you ever thought of doing a chicken/beef or chicken/veal combo? If you really want to serve your guests shrimp, you could have them as an appetizer!

  • My reception offered a duet option, but there was only one to pick from.  One of my BMs had her wedding at the same venue and went with the duet, but they did it to avoid having to deal with meal choices on the response card.  The duet our venue offered was chicken and steak, and on the response card there was no mention of the meal, but in small writing they put please notify us of any dietary restrictions.

The duet is nice to offer to your guests so that they have 2 different meats, but at my venue it was an extra $3 per person.  With us inviting 275 people, we figured dealing with the meals on the response card and escort cards was way better than paying an extra $800+ for the duet.

If you are set on the duet though, I would go with the chicken and steak, and then tell guests there is a vegetarian option.  It depends on your guests though.  Out of our 200 guests in attendance, approx. 100 picked steak, 75 chicken, and 25 salmon.  So in my experience chicken and steak are much more popular than fish.
