Are vases filled with water/flowers and a floating candle informal?

I really like centerpieces that are tall vases filled with water and a stem of flowers with a floating candle on top.  FMIL and I went to a florist she found yesterday for a consultation.  I asked the florist about the tall vases with water/flower/floating candle (which I'd mentioned to FMIL before) and FMIL jumped in a declared that they wouldn't go with the reception at all.  She went on and on about how our wedding is formal (which it is) and the reception location is traditional (country club) and said that my idea would clash completely.

I really didn't think that tall vases with flowers and floating candles were considered informal.  Is FMIL totally off-base or would you find them out of place at a formal wedding?

I had considered something like this for my guest book table.  I think she is highly mistaken--I've seen them at plenty of formal weddings.  My insipiration picture was similar to this one--the Knot has a ton of them.  It's also very cost-effective since you aren't using a ton of flowers.

I actually think they're very nice and I, too, have seen them at formal weddings.  Maybe your FMIL was thinking of something else...
