Might sound crazy, but I hate dancing! What are some alternatives to a fun reception without dancing

I've never liked dancing, and I'm not a fan of being the center of attention.  I especially am not a fan of the typical "dollar dance." I'm a bride, not a prostitute.  Anyone heard of, or thought of great alternatives for family and friends to enjoy each others company, without the bride having to embarass herself?

dollar dances are frowned upon around here.

have you thought of a cocktail reception/heavy appetizers? have a band or a DJ play background music (or use an ipod hooked up to a sound system if offered)

the thing is when there is no dancing, guests may not stay very long. as long as you are okay with that, then you are fine.
  • You can have dancing at your reception without a dollar dance and the bride making a fool of herself.  Just have a DJ or a band and let people go crazy.  You can mingle with those not dancing and enjoy yourself. It doesn't have to be more complicated than that.
  • Just because you are not dancing doesn't mean your guests can't. If you skip dancing completely, don't worry about trying to come up with fun things to do in place of dancing, though. Just let people eat and mingle. Maybe go for a morning or afternoon reception to lessen the expectation of dancing if you want to skip it.

  • Yeah, first of all I would like to say if I went to a typical evening reception with no dancing, I may be disappointed and would probably leave shortly after dinner.  You don't have to dance...but your guests may want to.  So, you mingle with guests who are not dancing.
If you don't want dancing at all I would recommend either a short reception of heavy apps, or short dessert reception.  Just my opinion though.  I don't think much other entertainment really fits a wedding.  Like what do you want...a clown? a majician?  I really can't think of anything else I would want to fill that much time at a reception.

This exactly.  Just because you don't like to dance doesn't mean your guests don't.  You know your crowd better than we do so you can judge whether or not to have a reception with dancing.

oh, i knew that, i was just trying to say that they are frowned upon, so she isnt alone in not liking them :)
  • I don't think you need dancing for a fun reception!

You could look into renting some fair games and set up a mini-carnival? I'm sure a big company would do that but if that is too expensive it's be easy to DIY. Just keep it simple, darts/pingpong ball tossing/bean bags etc.

Different idea would be a 'casino night'. Everyone gets x amount of wedding dollars..

Dk how big your wedding is but i'm just brainstorming!

We're not having a dance either.... but we're not filling that time with anything other than offering an amazing meal, a few short speaches and time to mingle to some great background music.  We've put the word out that there won't be a dance and that the evening will be over around 8/8:30.   It's amazing how many people have reacted very positively about the early night!  If folks want they can continue the party at a nice patio in town afterwards.
