Mine was at 5am the day we were leaving for our annual anniversary trip to the beach. My FI was going to propose during the fireworks (we met on 4th of July). He is really bad about keeping things from me and could not wait any longer. He woke me up after not sleeping all night to propose. It was actually exactly what I wanted. Just the two of us with our doggieSmile

I was having a terrible week and on a Wednesday FI decided to take me out to eat. I threw on jeans and a long sleeve shirt cause we usually just go to our local bar and grab wings or something. Well he got on the highway and drive 45 min to this NICE steak place, Ruth Chris'. I was kinda mad cause I would've dressed better but I was happy about going to steak since he usually doesn't eat it. We sat down and he asked me to hold my hand. I said no. We don't do that in restaurants. He asked again and I said no again and asked why he was being so wierd. This went on for about 10 min. Finally he asked again and I said ok but your hand is under the table. He said I know, so I stuck my hand under the table and he put my ring on my finger! I felt bad for telling him no. Lol We were going to the beach that Saturday and he said he wanted to do it then but he said he picked up the ring that day and couldn't wait anymore!

This is CC/pasted from our website!  Kinda long...

Our birthdays are very close together (Josh is 1/4 and I'm 1/13), and every year for Josh I cook him a big breakfast for dinner.  This year, when he asked me what we were doing for my birthday, I kept telling him I wanted him to cook me dinner (something that hasn't happened in the nearly 4 years we've been together)!

So, on Saturday the 8th, he asked me not to come home from work the next day until after 6 because he was going to cook me a nice dinner.  I was pumped that he actually took my request seriously! :)  Throughout the course of the day, he sent me a few text messages that said, "Blue or Red?"  I figured he had texted the wrong person, but I just so happened to wear a blue dress to work that day, so I replied, "BLUE!"  Before long he also had others texting me the same thing.  I just figured they were making fun of me for something, but just kept replying, "BLUE!"

When I arrived home from work, I immediately saw a sign that read, "Blue or Red?"  Then I got to the next door... where there was another sign, "Seriously, Blue or Red?"  I opened the door to find one last sign, "Last chance Blue or Red?"  And directly in front of me were 2 shirts - A Blue shirt on the left that read, "YES! :)" and a Red shirt on the right that read, "NO! :("  Then Josh, who was sitting with his back facing me, got up, and turned around wearing a shirt that said, "Emily will you marry me?"  He got down on one knee and gave me his speil, and said, so do you want to wear blue or do you want to wear red?  It was just a coincidence that I had been saying blue all day!!  But, of course, I chose BLUE! :)

It actually gets even better .... before I even said yes, I asked if he asked my dad!  He took me over to the kitchen and played a C.D. of him asking my dad's blessing.... on live radio in front of a national audience!!  My dad is a radio show host on the Catholic Channel on Sirius Radio!  It was amazing!  I can't believe all those people kept the secret from me for 4 days!

Mine was on the beach after dinner during a trip to Turks and Caicos. It was a beautiful night so we decided to go snuggle on a lounge chair under a palapa on the beach in front of our resort. We were just laying there chatting and listening to the ocean waves and he proposed. It was perfect and fun celebrating in paradise the rest of out trip.

My FI had me convinced that he was never going to ask me to marry him. Little did I know, he had been planning for over a year… here is our story from our wedding website :)

Each summer, Lora and her family rent a cabin for a relaxing week in northern Wisconsin. This year, Clinton came for the first time. Before he came, he let Lora know that he would like to get away for a bit each day to “recharge,” but really, he had a sneaky plan up his sleeve. Lora, completely oblivious to Clinton’s plan, said it wouldn’t be a problem.

Clinton joined Lora and her family on Wednesday, June 27. By time Friday came, Lora and Clinton hadn’t been able to spend much time alone (minus a quick trip to some stores in town) and Clinton was starting to get frustrated because his plan wasn’t working out. Then, on the last night at the cabin, everyone decided it would be best just to head back to Iola (her hometown) since the temperature and humidity outside were rising, and the cabin did not have air conditioning. Clinton didn’t know what to do, since his plan had been foiled. However, on their way back to Iola, they talked about going for a bike ride during the sunset, so Clinton thought that might be the perfect opportunity. But, he realized he didn’t have the ring since it was in her parents’ vehicle and they rode home with her sister and her family… her parents took a detour to the casino on the way home, so they didn’t get back until it was too late. With the sun setting on his plan again, Clinton started to convince himself that it just wasn’t going to happen.

The next morning, Clinton and Lora were reading their books and relaxing in the living room as her family ran around the house getting their weekly chores done. As everyone else left to run some errands, Clinton finally decided it was now or never. He took Lora out to a bench in the backyard, which was her favorite spot to sit growing up, and surprised her with a beautiful diamond ring. Lora was so excited, she could only say, “Really?” and stick out her hand. Finally, about ten minutes later, she said yes.

Well I knew that the proposal was coming.  We had bought a new car the week before and had stopped at one of the malls to look at rings.  Of course we found the perfect ring.  We talked it over and decided to get it the next week.  He would not let me near the store while he was purchasing it.  We brought it home and he put it away.  He was okay the first day or so.  By the end of the second day, while sitting in the living room, he kept telling me he wanted to give me the ring but didn't know how to ask me.  I told him to tell me why he loved me and why he wanted to marry me. So he told me then he said wait here so I sat on the floor while he went to get "some thing."  He came out with the ring and asked me to marry him.  I was so cute and perfect.  :)

    Yeah, Lindsay! Where's your story?

I'm also copying and pasting mine from our wedding website:

In May 2010, Drew sent me a text message asking if I wanted to get married at Voodoo Doughnuts. Yup, he asked me by text message. The weird thing is that I had actually been reading about Voodoo Doughnut’s weddings earlier that day. I told him if that was a proposal, it wasn’t the best, but since he had asked we would talk about it when I got home.

We spent more than just that night talking about it and came to the conclusion that the next step in our relationship was going to be marriage. We went ring shopping together on October 10th, 2010 at Gilt in NW Portland. I tried on so many rings. In the end, what I thought I would like in an engagement ring was much different than the ones we decided that we liked best. We left that day without a ring, but Drew later called them and made arrangements to purchase me the most beautiful ring of all.
On Saturday, February 26th, Drew officially proposed. We were at one of our favorite tiki bars in West Hollywood, Tiki Ti, dressed in vintage Hawaiian clothing and having a great time when Mike, the owner and head bartender of Tiki Ti, told us that we were like the last of the motikians, a dying breed of true tiki culture. Drew then pulled something out of his pocket, opened up a little box and asked, "Will you marry me? We could be the last of the motikians together." Inside the box was a vintage 1940s ring. Of course, I said yes! He then told me he'd been carrying the ring around for days waiting for the right moment to ask me and couldn't think of a better time to ask then at one of our favorite places having a great time together.

My FI proposed to me on Easter morning.  FI had ester baskets made for my three kids.. but what I didn't know what that there was one for me.  I guess he had put them out after I had fallen asleep.  So in the morning when the kids woke up they were super excited to open their baskets and brought them into the room and opened them while I was still 1/2 asleep. (I don't know why my kids insist on waking up at 7am on the weekends!).  Well, my son kept asking who the extra one was for and FI told him to bring it into the room because it was for me... I totally expected just a basket with candy or something.  so I started opening it, still half asleep.  It had a bunch of candy and a little stuffed animal and 3 plastic eggs in it.  The first egg had Hershey kisses in it, the 2nd egg had a beautiful swarvoski crystal bracelet in it and the 3rd egg had a piece of paper in it that said "will you marry me?"...  By then my hands were shaking!  the kids were all excited and then he gave me the ring :)

It was super cute and cozy!  For weeks my son kept saying the easter bunny gave me a ring...lmao!

    edited January 2012

i'm not on here much, but I'll add something anyway :)

It was my birthday and I had gone two birthdays without a proposal, even though he kept hinting that I was getting a very special present each year. I admit, I was a bit disappointed each time, but he had gone through a REALLY terrible divorce back in 2003 and I didn't expect that we'd ever marry. So, when my birthday finally rolled around again, I had asked for a new purse. I also didn't think anything of a proposal since he had his daugther staying with us. That morning, we went out on our back patio since it's always so nice in AZ in November. That is when he pulled out the little box and asked! He had told his daughter the night before, so when she woke up, she immediately ran out to see the ring!

EDIT- I realize I made it sound like we had only been together for 2 birthdays. We've actually been together for almost 6 years and he asked me after 4 years! Better late than never I suppose!

    Emily  I love it!!

Mine was also by text so you're not alone kimmykupcakes

I had gone through a few recent tragedies, (my son's father dying, and unrelated my step dad being in a bad bad accident)  and I was staying with my mom to make sure she was ok.  Bad part is that she lives in Illinois, 1300 miles away from our home town in Rhode Island.  So text message became a huge part of FI and I's relationship understandably.

We were going back and forth about movies and werewolves vs vampires, and other scary movie nonsense, and he made some quirky remark.  My response was a simple I love you so completely.  ( I love that he is such a great friend to me we talk about the silliest things and he just goes with it)
To this he responded with If you love me so much, why don't you marry me.  My initial response was to laugh because he sounded like a 5 year old, but then he called me and explained himself seriously as I realized he was 100% serious and 100% lost my cool.  He didn't buy the ring, but the next time we were together he did bring my grandmother's ring to me, which we had reset into a setting I adore!

Matt started the conversation about what kind of rings I liked about a year before he actually proposed. We looked at several stores, but I didn't find anything I liked. I emailed him a link to a jeweler and asked if we could go look there when he decided he wanted to do the rest on his own.

Valentines day he made dinner and he had bought me some expensive work outfits. We got into a little arguement because I thought he should have saved his money and put it towards a ring rather than buying me clothes (that didn't even fit).

Two nights later, Feb 16th, he called me as I was getting out of class and asked if I wanted to go out to eat. It was very odd for us to go out to eat on a Wednesday night, but I agreed. Also while we were on the phone he said that a package came in the mail for me and he asked if he could open it. I told him no. It was just fabric and I didn't see why he would have a desire to look at fabric. He then told me that it got damaged during shipping.

On the way home I felt bad for telling him no. So when I got home I went to the package and handed it to him and told him to open it. He pulled the ring out of the package, then got on one knee and asked. He had gone to the jewelry store that day and bought it. He was going to wait, but after he had it in his hands he couldn't. He was going to wait till dinner, but knew he would be very nervous throughout and wanted to get it over with as soon as I came home. As he was telling me about the package he got the idea to put it in there. Hence the damage.

We were up in MI for his best friend's wedding. After dinner at his parents house we went out to walk around in this little downtown area - Rochester, MI - just to get out of the house. So he was driving around looking for parking and kept on driving in circles which was making me crazy. Finally parked at this park area and we went walking.....I knew something was up when he took my hand and was holding onto it with a death grip.

We were at this little circle area on the path when he started talking about us and how much he loves me, etc. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. The first thing I said when I saw the ring - its not gaudy!* We had a good laugh at that one.

    Then a yes, of course.

*this is because I've seen a lot of rings that are so big and outrageous they are borderline ridiculous. Mine is exactly what I would pick out - art deco style that does not look huge.

Just copied mine from the wedding website:

I was ridiculously angry on Christmas Eve.  No water in days, showering out of gallon jugs, and the Eagles were just officially eliminated from the playoffs.  Mad.  I was yelling.

We decided to exchange gifts.  I was mad at that, too.  The watch repair place didn't come through, and John only received a video game and flip-flops.

After John opened his gifts, he told me to sit down.  I said "Okay, fine."  He appeared from the bedroom with a little box that was tied with red ribbon.  I had asked John earlier for a citrine ring, my birth stone. I instantly started smiling, thinking about the ring.

"It's not exactly what you asked for..." John said as he handed me the box.

I gave John an awkward look and proceeded to open it.

    Bam.

    A  stunning diamond solitaire.

    "Are you serious?!"

After a bunch of tears, and repeatedly asking "Are you serious?", John put the ring on my finger.

FI actually had the ring for about a two weeks since I was coaching track and the meets kept running late he wasn't able to find the perfect time.  So finally (in his mind it was an eternity lol) he asked me to get some Chinese and go up to a look out park that looks over Lake Erie.  We've gone up there quite a few times and so I didn't think a lot about it.  We had dinner and walked around some.  Then he wanted me to come back over to the gazebo and I told him no I wanted to go home.   Well he told me again and again, and he doesn't usually "order" me around, lol.  So I thought it was a little strange but finally went over there. He got down on one knee and proposed.  I was so surprised that it was really happening that I was talking like a mile a minute and asked questions before I even said yes.  Oops! lol

FI's mom one us a vacation to Mackinac Island for a weekend of our choice in a raffle she entered (she won it and gave it to us saying she wanted us to have a nice weekend together). Thinking I was being romantic I got ahold of the travel guy and planned it for the weekend of FI's birthday.

On his birthday we made the trip to Fort Mackinac. We were up at the 'tea room' having wine for awhile and chatting. After that he took me over to one of the lookouts, to check out where they do the cannon demonstrations. He lifted me up and sat me on the edge of the wall, right beside the 'Do Not Sit on Ledge' sign. I was just pointing that out and that he'd get me in trouble when he pulled out the ring and popped the question. A complete stranger who was just wandering up after took a picture for us.

Afterwards he admitted that he wanted to ask while we were at the Tea Room, but there were people there so he chickened out lol

I am enjoying everyone's story. I will try to make mine short with out leaving out the details.

I kind of knew the engagement was coming. My FI had mention that he was looking for my dad to ask for my hand. I thought he was joking. Until my big mouth dad told me that he asked for my hand. My dad actually got antsy about when it was going to happen.  We then planned to go on a mini vacation for my springbreak. ( I was hoping it would happen there). We were in Williamsburg,VA. We were supose to go to dinner however, there was a tornado warning ( it looked bad outside). So we stayed in and watched Aladdin (Disney movie). I guess FI didn't know what to do, so he went to the bedroom ( apartment style rooms) and brought back the ring, saying HERE IS THE RING I WAS GOING TO PROPOSE OVER DINNER. I looked at the ring and put it back on the table. He asked me what was wrong. I told him, he did not ask me to Marry Him. He paused the movie got on one knee poured his heart out and asked me to marry him.  I SAID YES!!! And Now ALADDIN is my Favorite Disney movie.

People thought I should work and I got pulled away. Murphy's Law at it's finest!!

Here's our story (sorry it's so large, I copied it)
We decided  to do a day at Disney, go to Animal Kingdom then go the the Food & Wine Festival at EPCOT.  The entire time we're at Animal Kingdom Paul was in a weird mood.  Kinda distant, not really paying attention, and a little on edge.  I'm thinking "Great, we're supposed to have a fun and relaxing day and I'm stuck with Mr. Crabby Patty."
After we get to EPCOT Paul wants to go get his picture with Mickey.  All I can think is WHY?! All I want to do is drink around the world and see Rick Springfield.  I reluctantly agree and after waiting 45min and having horrible thoughts of how to get back at all the kids around me we get to Mickey.  Now I'm the cranky one and just want to smile, say cheese, and get out of there!  But, no, Paul has to show the photographer how to work the camera.  I'm freaking out to take the picture and be done with it.  That's when Paul turns around and gets down on one knee!!  I start crying and of course, said YES!!!

The best part is after I said "yes" first, he handed me the ring box.  I told him to put the ring on my finger.  He tried to put it on my right hand.  I said LEFT!  He said this is your left!  I said other left!!
