Wedding gift etiquette?

We received our first wedding gift yesterday, a month before our wedding, and I opened it. Am I supposed to send a thank you card now, or after the wedding?

Now so that the sender knows you received it!  Traditionally, people wait to use thier gifts until after they are married, and if that is you, just mention how much you look forward to using whatever arrived.

We received gifts before our wedding and opened them! The same day though we wrote them a thank you card and sent it out the next day. I agree with everyone here, it's good to do this so that they know you got it and it's not broken! Congrats on your first gift! It's so exciting!!

Oops, we didn't open ours till after the wedding....and we're sending out thank you cards now.
