I highly highly recommend you check out Oreck. My dad has had one for years and years, and FI loved it so much that I got him one for Valentine's Day last year. They're incredibly light, and it works so well! My dad swears by his, and they have two dogs (plus mine when we stay at their house), so it passes the fur test.

I'm looking for the perfect vacuum, and at the moment I'm considering the Dyson Animal but I'm concerned about the price.

My parents have an Oreck and my mom swears by it too. The only problem she's had though is that stores have discontinued selling the bags she needs for it. She found a place online where she can get them in bulk, but still, I'd rather go bagless.

My FMIL had a Oreck, but then after borrowing my vac to see how it worked she went online and ordered one for herself!  She was amazed at how well it worked. And she is a neat FREAK! So she shouldn't have had much in her carpet but it was FULL when she used it and even had to empty it. She was sold!

Wow. I wish I could just take different ones home to test. Or maybe I can? I wonder how easily they are to return if you use them just once..

We considered Oreck, but I want something more universal.  I also DO NOT want bags.  Bags cost money, plus you have to have them on hand when you need to change the bag- and if you forget to get them at the store, you are SOL.

Like I said in my other post, if you are researching a vacuum and want to see what Consumer Reports said, let me know, and I will try and send you the report (you have to pay for an online subscription, and my mom has one- it's been really helpful with all this registry stuff!).

As much as I hate to admit it sometimes... I sell vacuums and appliances... if anyone has any questions, I'll give you some honest opinions. Seriously.
